IF YOU DON’T YET LOVE THE BOOK OF RUTH, please consider this. A “type” is a symbol, where the author intended a character to represent a thing or person. We have three main characters: Naomi, Ruth and Boaz. What or whom does each symbolize?
NAOMI: She was a Jew returning from exile in a foreign land
RUTH: She was a Gentile, a non-Jew, who was grafted into Naomi's family by marriage and followed Naomi loyally to Israel, worked in Boaz's field (but never worked for him), became Boaz’s bride and bore him children
BOAZ: He was rich and kind and became Ruth’s provider, protector, “Kinsman-Redeemer,” husband, and the father of her children
There are only two other people named, secondary characters Orpah and Obed; perhaps they're types, too! Looking forward to your thoughts in the Replies section below.

1 Now Naomi had a relative on her husband’s side, a man of standing whose name was Boaz.
2 And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor.”
Naomi said to her, “Go ahead, my daughter.” 3 So she went out, entered a field and began to glean behind the harvesters. As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz.
4 Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters, “The Lord be with you!”
“The Lord bless you!” they answered.
5 Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters, “Who does that young woman belong to?”
6 The overseer replied, “She is the Moabite who came back from Moab with Naomi. 7 She said, ‘Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.’ She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now, except for a short rest in the shelter.”

8 So Boaz said to Ruth, “My daughter, listen to me. Don’t go and glean in another field and don’t go away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. 9 Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled.”
10 At this, she bowed down with her face to the ground. She asked him, “Why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me—a foreigner?”
11 Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before. 12 May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.”
13 “May I continue to find favor in your eyes, my lord,” she said. “You have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant—though I do not have the standing of one of your servants.”
14 At mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come over here. Have some bread and dip it in the wine vinegar.”
When she sat down with the harvesters, he offered her some roasted grain. She ate all she wanted and had some left over. 15 As she got up to glean, Boaz gave orders to his men, “Let her gather among the sheaves and don’t reprimand her. 16 Even pull out some stalks for her from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up, and don’t rebuke her.”
17 So Ruth gleaned in the field until evening. Then she threshed the barley she had gathered. 18 She carried it back to town, and her mother-in-law saw how much she had gathered. Ruth also brought out and gave her what she had left over after she had eaten enough.
19 Her mother-in-law asked her, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!”
Then Ruth told her mother-in-law about the one at whose place she had been working. “The name of the man I worked with today is Boaz,” she said.
20 “The Lord bless him!” Naomi said to her daughter-in-law. “He has not stopped showing his kindness to the living and the dead.” She added, “That man is our close relative; he is one of our guardian-redeemers.”
21 Then Ruth the Moabite said, “He even said to me, ‘Stay with my workers until they finish harvesting all my grain.’”
22 Naomi said to Ruth her daughter-in-law, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with the women who work for him, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.”
23 So Ruth stayed close to the women of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in-law.

NOTES ON MY SELECTION CRITERIA Q u a l i t y The Bible and its Author are my focus, not the art:
this is The Bible in Paintings, not “Great Paintings” nor even “Good Paintings.” So, works need not be masterpieces to qualify for inclusion here—they don’t need to be housed at the Louvre nor auctioned by Sotheby’s. They only need to illustrate successfully some aspect of the Biblical text or, frankly, just tickle my fancy, which I'm asking the Holy Spirit to guide. Often, artists misrepresent the Scripture, but unless the error is material or heretical I usually include the artwork, trusting that the Spirit is perfectly capable of defending Himself. So, with such forgiving filters, it means that you're seeing practically everything I'm finding.P a c i n g The pace may seem glacial to those eager to see their favorite events. My commission is to search for art on each Bible passage in sequence; if I find enough, then it becomes the next installment, even if undramatic. But where there is no art, that Bible passage goes untold here. The Bible is a thick book, as you know; but we'll get there eventually, Lord willing. Always remember:

But it is not only oil-on-canvas that can so help us; I refer to the astonishing video series The Chosen, which strolls through the four Gospels at the most leisurely pace. The eight episodes of Season 1 are finished, and the second of a planned seven seasons is coming soon. I say "leisurely" because after an entire year’s viewing Jesus still has only seven of the apostles (although He's preparing to call up Thomas from the minor leagues--but Thomas is skeptical, of course). Anticipating a canvas of fifty-plus hours instead of a movie's paltry two hours, The Chosen turns the characters (especially including Jesus!) into three-dimensional humans and brings the Gospels alive--you have never seen anything even remotely like it! When I was 7, my Aunt Mary took me to see the movie “The Story of Ruth”, which was (VERY) loosely based on this wonderful Book of the Bible. I fell in love with the story and it was one of the first OT books I ever read.
Looking back, and reading up on the movie on the Internet, I found out it wasn’t that great a movie, but it sure made a deep impression on me!
And wasn’t it the very next year in which you gave yourself to the Lord?
Twenty years later. I just liked the story, and loved to read.
Thank for this. Interesting that many seem to show Boaz as an “old” man. Whatever his age, his union with Ruth resulted in progeny, one of which became King David, and made Ruth a progenitor of Jesus, through David.....and Bathsheba. Only God could engineer such grace and generosity.

Ruth 3:10 has Boaz surprised that Ruth has come to him rather than to a young man, indicating he was much older.
Clearly he was "older" than Ruth ("You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor" 3:10b), but that surely does not necessitate him being "old."
Only God could engineer such grace and generosity.
Bingo! You have cut to the chase. That's why I like the book of Daniel so much, because it so aptly illustrates that, ultimately, God is in complete control. Then, like you, I notice the same thing in the other books.
Young men: 20-30 Manhood starts at 20. Fully grown is 30, when the priest may begin working as a priest.
Boaz: 40-50 or more. He’s related to Elimelech. Younger brother? Cousin? There’s someone closer. Another brother? Another cousin?
Ruth is probably 25-35, having been married 5-10 years.
I find it fascinating the Bible doesn’t reveal his relationship to Elimelech, nor the name or relationship of the closer relative.
Your fascination with the Bible's omissions bespeaks your thoughtfulness in considering the text. Nothing is either included or excluded by chance, of course; to me, it is one of the most wonderful parts of Bible study to, well, wonder about those things, and others similarly. Along with other things, I hope during the Millennium we'll learn about all those gaps.

I expect so! We’ll have Ruth and Boaz to question, as well as David and Jesus.
My hope is for a complete and accurate history from mankind from Adam onward.
