PROFITING FROM PROVERBS - 7/12/2020
King James Bible | 7/12/2020 | pilgrimsprogress

“A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4).

TOPICS: Ministry/Outreach
KEYWORDS:
The idea of the high regard for women is a Christian attribute; it's not a humanistic aspect. It didn't come from humanism, it didn't flow out of education, it didn't flow out of religion, it didn't flow just out of western culture. It flowed out of Christianity.

TODAY’S VERSE:

“A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4).

First of all, it should be said that this verse probably works both ways. We all know men that shame their wives, just as there are men that shame their husbands, but it says there that “a virtuous woman is a crown to her husband,” and you never really know how bad the feminism movement messed things up; and it's not all about husbands beating up their wives and the wives get to be doormats and all those sort of things, you know just barefoot and pregnant and all that kind of stuff. It's not about that.

You don't know how bad the feminist movement messed things up until you started reading the Bible and thinking about things, because “a virtuous woman is a crown to her husband.” That woman is his crown. and you know what? A good husband will take care of his crown or should. That feminism movement sprung up in this country; a land of plenty, where women were treated better than anywhere else in the world. Go to Kenya and just see how women are treated or go to a Muslim country and see how women are treated. Isn’t it a hoot that so many American women are asking for Sharia law? They have no idea. Go read American Indian literature in history and see what the squaws were, they were not a crown.

So, ladies, when it says that you should be in subjection to your own husband you say, “I resent that.” Well, maybe he could just as rhetorically resent the fact that he has to love you like he loves his own. The husband is supposed to love his wife as much as he loves himself, and don’t even ask how well he is succeeding in that.

So. while it may be hard for her to submit sometimes, know that it is a kind of two-way street. It's a challenge both ways. God is a male, despite what trend in religion seems to be. He's not a female goddess. It is a masculine Book, and the fact of the matter is that the masculine Bible wound up elevating women higher than anywhere else in the world and in any culture ever devised.

“A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband, but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones,” and some men are probably rottenness, practically speaking, in their wives’ bones. This thing can go both ways, but this virtuous woman is a crown to her husband.

Daily Bible study is necessary if we are going to begin our day with the right attitude and the right spiritual diet. Proverbs has 31 chapters, and most months have 31 days, so let's read a chapter of Proverbs a day and see what God might have for us. As the Lord leads, share with us what God has shown you in a special way and by His grace let us build up a devotional repository. Let's keep our knives and forks handy for some daily bread! Ideally, a chapter or two of Proverbs will fit in nicely with a good plan of reading our Bibles through each year.

If anyone would like to be added to the ping list, please let me know either by post or by p.m.

Proverbs is a great book, and it is more sadly ignored because folks think that if it is Old Testament, it isn’t really for us today. We see Jesus Christ, personified as wisdom, all through the book. And “fools,” “simpletons,” and “scorners” will always be with us.
