Young people are drawn to the Traditional Latin Mass by its beauty, sense of mystery and transcendence, Archbishop Alexander K Sample has said.
Speaking during a Pontifical High Mass in the Extraordinary Form at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, Archbishop Sample praised Pope Benedict XVI for the great gift of Summorum Pontificum the document that allowed the traditional Mass to be more widely celebrated and said the reverence and sacredness of the old Mass would enrich the Novus Ordo.
The Archbishop of Portland, Oregon also noted how many young people were in the congregation, saying: You are a signa great signof encouragement and hope for the Church tossed about these days on the troubled waters of secularism and relativism. As they say: you get it.
The sermon which was broadcast live on EWTN has been widely shared on social media. Archbishop Sample added: Maybe the experience of these young people growing up with the Ordinary Form did not carry with it the beauty, reverence, prayerfulness, sense of mystery and transcendence, or wonder and awe that the Traditional Latin Mass has provided for them.
Perhaps this is the answer to the question about why so many young people are drawn to the Holy Mass celebrated according to the 1962 Missal.
Archbishop Alexander K. Sample is the titular Chairman of the Board of the Oregon Catholic Press, though of course there’s really very little he can do about the look-at-me Hootenany that spews out of OCP to infect our parish liturgical music, but you could hear in his intonations that he is a very musical Priest.
He is my Archbishop (Western Oregon) and has made small changes in the printing of the OCP materials. I’m sure more are coming! I am encouraged.
He is also holding training sessions for bringing all Extraordinary Ministers of Communion into one boat, changing the procedures for them as they visit the homebound, and putting forth new guidelines into being a more reverent lector.
In fact I will be attending both of those workshops this weekend.
Be encouraged, everyone!!
Nice to hear some good news. Sounds like you are blessed with this archbishop!
I watched ON MY CELL PHONE the Pontificate Mass last night, for two hours. (Filmed by EWTN, Archbishop Sample.) I am so thankful for Sample.
Magnificent. My heart broke throughout, with the loveliness of the sweet prayers and the readings and was stricken with admiration for all the young participating near the Archbishop, and the marvelous deacons assisting him.
I am so used to my heart breaking from forced attendance into the sleepy and UN-extraordinary Mass.
Thx and good.
The RCC really, really screwed up by refusing to allow the traditional Latin Mass. Drove so many away, didn’t attract too many new. Glad to see it turning around.
Be encouraged, everyone!

Prayers up to the Holy Spirit.
Can’t wait to watch later...
You will definitely like it!
57 years old. God, give him years!
“the look-at-me Hootenany “....that is our current church music! I laugh at the description but it is sad!
Amen! Amen! Amen!
Definitely! Thanks to Pope Benedict XVI!
honestly..I grow weary...some kneel at the beginning of “Lamb of God’
and some stand until ‘grant us Peace’
then some of our parish have turn and great neighbor(at beginning of Mass) when we should have silence.
its all frustrating and I do what I think is right but ???
how do other parishes do this?
My family and I moved so many times, and so we went to a number of parishes. Things like this are a factor; if there is a choice, we would choose a parish that, at least, avoids the aesthetics foreign to Catholicism.
At the beginning of Mass, it shouldn’t be a problem. Neither at the end. No one so far tried to socialize with me while I am on the knees with hands joined in prayer. And I am a sociable man.
But remember, you are there to eat the Blessed Sacrament; the church is a hospital and you meet people who need medicine same as you. May your piety rub off on them.
That’s one of the things that our Archbishop will be addressing at the workshops I am attending on Saturday. All parishioners will kneel after the Lamb of God!
Did you watch the video? Go for a true Catholic Church!
