It appears I this thoughtful post of yours that you are trying to make a case that private interpretations exist. On this we agree.

Perhaps I caused this confusion when I posted, “ not once. Not ever.”

What I meant was that God nowhere in Scripture ever prohibits a believer from interpreting Scripture when he or she reads it. This has been promolgated by those who do not read/understand the context of what is said in one passage. Unfortunately, the Roman wing of Christianity has used this sad lie to discourage and prevent people from feeding on the Word of God as they are commanded to do.

Personal interpretation is a different thing; obviously we must see how Scripture applies to ourselves. What is taught to others about what Scripture means, however, is a different thing.

The Church has always proclaimed Scripture to the people (who were for a long time illiterate), and never forbidden people from reading *Catholic* bibles; in fact, Catholic bibles were always available to people inside the church. Some bishops in France during a period of conflict between Catholics and Protestants there forbade the reading of the Bible in translation, but it would seem that the translations available at the time were not Catholic and were being used and distributed to lead people away from the Catholic Church.
