Francis orders change to Foot Washing Rite on Holy Thursday to include females
Fr. Z's Blog ^ | January 21, 2016 | Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

Today brought the news that the Congregation for Divine Worship and Discipline of the Sacraments (CDW) was ordered by Pope Francis to issue a document that allows for the washing of the feet of females on Holy Thursday in the optional foot washing rite during the Mass of the Last Supper in the Ordinary Form.

[...]

In Card. Sarah’s Decree we read that “it seemed good to the Supreme Pontiff Francis to change the norm”. Thus, now: Missalis Romani (p. 300 n. 11) legitur: «Viri selecti deducuntur a ministris…», quae idcirco sequenti modo mutari debet: «Qui selecti sunt ex populo Dei deducuntur a ministris…» (et consequenter in Caeremoniali Episcoporum n. 301 et n. 299 b: «sedes pro designatis»).

I note, however, that – in the Missale Romanum – the group from which people might be selected is restricted to “Populus Dei… the People of God”, which means, I think, at least Christians. The Caerimoniale has different language.

So, the rubric changes from “viri selecti… chosen males” to “qui selecti sunt… those who were chosen”.

This unprecedented innovation will be in effect for the Ordinary Form this coming Triduum.

They’ve been doing that in my church for a long time.

I can believe it; I’ve seen it in many places. But up to this point, it was technically a liturgical abuse to call up women to have their feet washed during the Holy Thursday service. Now, with the “blessing” of Pope Francis, it’s “perfectly legitimate”.

I just can’t think about these sorts of “Francis things” too hard or too long—I’d go crazy. I feel like hiding in a dark hole, in an induced coma, until he’s replaced.

It doesn’t bother me so much. More offended by the Pope’s radical left politics.

I know the uber Catholic traditionalists will hate for saying this, but I have no problem with hearing Mass in English, receiving Holy Communion in my hand, greeting people with a handshake after the Our Father...but it’s the way I raised. And I have no issue with women having their feet washed on Holy Thursday.

I didn’t have a problem with it either, because it’s the way I was raised.

But I’ve been in traditional parishes now for over a decade, and these changes do have a cumulative effect of desacralizing the liturgy. It’s hard to explain unless you get used to the older rite.

Well, except for Mass in English. I think Mass in English makes sense, although it should be “high” English and not to the exclusion of Latin as too often happens.

We agree! We go to a TLM whenever we can.

I have no issue with Latin. I wish it were still taught. People could learn so much from that language. For me, Latin was never an option. It was never taught anywhere I went to school. In high school we only had the option of Spanish, French, or German for a foreign language.

I learned Latin in hs and then Spanish was quite easy given the number of root words.

Of course the Latin teacher was a priest who had been one of Patton’s chaplains in Europe so we were held to a pretty high standard.

Female priests are the next ***fix***

Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi

I have no doubt that this heretic, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has this and more, in mind.

He needs to go ASAP...he is a cancer in the Church.

I think it’s stupid that foot washing became some kind of church-ianity ritual.

If some smug cleric wants to truly serve someone in our modern shoe-wearing culture, they should show up at someone’s house and clean their toilets.

From Vox Cantoris:

“That’s right ladies, you can wear a short skirt and give a little flash to Father Bob as he pours water on your feet in front of the congregation. But don’t worry, he’ll probably have no interest because he’s as queer as this decision.” -from the post

How is this unprecedented when this has been happening at Novus Ordo services for years? He's just formalizing things here.

I think it’s stupid that foot washing became some kind of church-ianity ritual.

The point of it, in the Catholic tradition, is not just some sort of general "service" or "just be nice to everyone" moment, but it's specifically tied to the commissioning of the apostles and the institution of Holy Orders, as a institution of *service* to the Church and one whose members are called to be *servants* to the Church, and, in a particular way, to each other.

Which is why it is wrong to wash the feet of women; it's tantamount to ordaining them. The Pope doesn't understand this, or simply doesn't care.

Was foot washing a pre- or post- Vatican-2 practice?

I’m ‘only’ 53 y.o., so I don’t remember.

It was added to the Mass for Holy Thursday in 1955. Prior to that, it was part of Vespers, so it would have been seen mostly in monasteries.

“Female priests are the next ‘fix’”

No, more than once he has said that John Paul has closed the matter.

I do wish he would have codified the optional foot-washing for women, which he has the power to do, before doing it for three years as Pope, for technically, he was engaging in a liturgical abuse.
