CCDictionary ^ | 11-13-14 | Fr. John Hardon's Modern Catholic Dictionary

Featured Term (selected at random:

PANTHEON

All the gods of a polytheistic people. Also a temple dedicated to all gods, or at least the principal deities of a nation. The Roman Pantheon was built by Agrippa in 27 B.C., rebuilt by Hadrian in the second century A.D., and converted in 609 into a Christian church. The Panthéon in Paris, originally the church of St. Geneviéve, was taken over during the French Revolution as a memorial temple of unbelief; after exchanging hands several times, it finally became what it is now, a national monument and mausoleum for illustrious Frenchmen. (Etym. Greek pantheion, temple consecrated to all gods.)

Deuteronomy 12:2 Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:

Now would you please show where God said to convert the sites of pagan worship to worship of Him?

I got to visit the original Pantheon in Rome some years ago.
It's a MAGNIFICENT building, still standing and a monument to the building capabilities of the Romans.

Most cultures had/have pantheons for worship. The Chinese and Indians, two VERY old societies did. So did the Greeks and the then-pagan Romans conquered Greece and they re-named many of the Greek gods to Roman names.

I used to read the Amy Tan books about China and her description of the kitchen god, garden god, etc., were very interesting.

What Judaism and Christianity brought about, besides the ONE GOD idea, was a better attitude toward females in general.
Mary, as the mother of God/Jesus, was/is venerated today as are the saints of both genders. There is a basic and large difference between VENERATE (as in respect and reverence toward saints and Mary) and ADORATION (as in worship of our Divine God).

Females aren't particularly "cherished" in China even today. When the Chinese discovered amniocentesis they aborted so many female fetuses that an entire generation of men had no wives. Those men were called the "Bare Branches."
Today, it's not much better for females over there.

India loves its girl babies, AS LONG as there IS a male heir.

From my years in the middle east I SAW with my own eyes how the Saudi families love their daughters. They like BIG families and ENTIRE extended families, if they have the money, live in large, walled compounds.
Hmmm, kinda reminds me of the Kennedys.

Ya right, lotsa mention of temples there. Beautiful use of scripture, almost as brilliant as your understanding of conversion. Sola away, baby!

Hmmmm, you didn’t show anywhere that God instructs to convert any of the pagan worship places like the Catholic Church does. Interesting that.

I showed as much scripture as you did to back up your initial "statement", which was

God’s commands to destroy all temples etc that were used to “serve other gods” ey?

Now you may want to talk to your preacher boy - turns out the Second Temple, you know, the one that the Lord called His "Father's house" when He went Biblical on the moneychangers - was once the home to an altar to Zeus. So if you have issues with Christians taking over sites that include a pagan history, take it up with Jesus, ey?

The Second Temple, you know the one that the Lord called His "Fathers house" was built by who and to whose specifications? It was only defiled by those worshipping Zeus as it was being defiled by the money changers. So now tell me whose temple it actually was. And you still haven't shown from scripture where God told His people to use the worship places originally dedicated to pagan gods.
