Abolish Vatican statehood
The Boston Globe ^ | 9/1/2014 | James Carroll

Posted on 09/03/2014 8:35:47 AM PDT by Dr. Thorne

This contradiction was laid bare recently when the Holy See, acting in secret, threw the protective cloak of diplomatic immunity over Archbishop Jozef Wesolowski — the papal nuncio in the Dominican Republic and an alleged serial abuser of minors. In a show of toughness, church officials defrocked Wesolowski and promised to try him according to the laws of Vatican City. In effect, though, church officials once again shielded a predator priest from civil jurisdiction.

We had a wedding Mass.

I PRESUME both parties must be Catholic to have a wedding Mass?

I do remember prior to our wedding we had to produce baptism and confirmation documents proving we were both Catholics in good standing. That’s why I assumed both parties must be Catholic to be married in the Catholic Church.

Not must, just preferred. Because the way it was explained to me when I married a non-Catholic, was that I would be excluding my husband from half of the wedding Mass. He would not be able to participate, so... Not the best way to start our union.

It made sense. I suppose if you really want a Mass you can have one. My priest preferred to only do a Mass when both were Catholic. The only thing left out is of course the Eucharist, but my husband could not receive any way.

Did he ever consider becoming a Catholic?

BTW-—for the benefit of others, I LOVE my Church and my faith, even if I don’t always agree 100% with some of its policies.

The compulsory clerical celibacy policy, for example, was imposed much later in Church history and for reasons that have nothing to do with anything which can be found in the Holy Bible. Pope Francis himself has stated as much.

Not yet, but I have not given up. He has issues with organized religion. Something that happened a long time ago. He was raised Lutheran. He has yet to notice the Miraculous Medal I just recently slipped under his side of the bed. :)

Keep trying. The Catholic Church is truly a glorious institution with a rich history and deep connection to the very beginning of Christianity.

But like all institutions, it is run by mere mortals, who are subject to sin, error, and mistakes.

Nothing in life is perfect and this is especially true with respects to politics and religion.

James Carroll is an extreme liberal thinks the New Testament is inherently anti-Semitic. Just thought you’d like to know who you’re linking to.

Yeah Doc, from the point of view of generic religious orthodoxy abolishing the Vatican state is a very bad thing to advocate.

Religious liberals not only believe the "new testament" is anti-Semitic (which I agree is true); they probably think the "old testament" is anti-Semitic as well. After all, those "Israelites" behaved like a bunch of crusading Baptist Ku-Klukkers . . . running around killing people because G-d told them to and believing they had the exclusive claim to truth. As every good liberal knows, "Jews" are against all that stuff. They just win Nobel Physics Prizes and perform dirty stand-up routines. Honestly, this is exactly what many liberal "philo-Semites" think. They just can't accept that those "fanatics" in the Hebrew Bible were "Jews" in the modern sense.

Question for you then.

You’re Catholic. Your husband is Jewish.

1) Were you married in the Catholic Church?

2) If your wedding was in the Catholic Church was it a wedding Mass?

Of course we were married in the Church. My Priest asked if I wanted the long version or the short one, since it was a very small wedding and no one from my husband’s side was coming, we opted for the short ceremony.

No, but we could have had one. It was our choice. We had a Jewish wedding the next day with a reception and I went to Mass after that because it was Sunday.

My wife and I were married in a full Mass over 30 years ago.

I was an unbaptized hethen at the time.
