Comedian Bill Maher has no plans to run for public office. In fact, he believes his outspoken atheism would be a major barrier to any potential candidacy. But at the same time, the Real Time HBO host also sees changing tides on the horizon when it comes to the treatment of non-believers in America.
In an interview Monday with entertainment news outlet TheWrap, Maher said that atheism will be the new gay marriage. What does he mean by this?
With the nation becoming more understanding and accepting of same-sex unions, it seems Maher believes that atheists, who have frequently been met with distrust by the general public, may also be gaining some ground. Rather than being derided or ignored, Maher seems to think that this portion of the public one that he is unabashedly a part of is now poised to have a civil rights moment of its own.
Despite this comment, during much of the interview Maher pointed out that atheists are currently wildly underrepresented in government. To be elected, he maintained, one generally must align with the Judeo-Christian roots that are so prevalent among Americans. This, of course, creates a barrier for non-believers.
When TheWraps Sharon Waxman pushed back, noting that anything is possible and getting in a dig that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was once a candidate for higher office, Maher clarified a few points.
Nobody elected her to the high office. She was number two, he said, reminding Waxman that Palin was chosen and not selected by the people....

Because persecution will certainly be the result, indeed the goal, of any 'civil rights for atheists' movement.
Maher is one terribly disturbed man/child.
“With the nation becoming more understanding and accepting of same-sex unions”
This is a lie.
These changes have not come about because the citizens wanted them, they are being forced (by the full weight of the Federal Government).
Permanent social changes do not come from force.
The government can shut down the debate and punish those that disagree with their view of things, but they can not force people to change their beliefs.
The United States is becoming a like a steam engine with the safety valve blocked. It is not a question if it will explode, but more a question of when.
These “people” are truly demented. I wouldnt want to be anywhere near them when they meet their maker
propaganda and force is not “culture”
Once the gays demand the right to initiate the children very young, I bet their polling drops
He’s incredibly disturbed.
The next Leninist culture minister?
When someone tells me they are atheist, I lose all interest in them as a person. I just see them as boring, and unthinking. Agnostics are fine, their wheels haven’t stopped moving.
My question is, let’s suppose Bill Maher is elected senator. What is he sworn in on? His biography?
“Agnostics are fine, their wheels havent stopped moving.”

I like that analogy.
I am also uncomfortable around Atheist.
While he’s by no means what I would call a Christian, I thought Trey Parker of South Park put it best:
“Basically ... out of all the ridiculous religion stories which are greatly, wonderfully ridiculous the silliest one I’ve ever heard is, ‘Yeah ... there’s this big giant universe and it’s expanding, it’s all gonna collapse on itself and we’re all just here just ‘cause ... just ‘cause’. That, to me, is the most ridiculous explanation ever.”
How can he claim to be an atheist when he hates Christians so much?
There are still too many good, normal people living in this country for it to become a full blown, God-hating, fag freak show.
You can bet your ass when this ugly creep is on his deathbed he’ll appreciate prayers from anyone that might offer them.
I despise the SOB.
GOD is all powerful and shall not be mocked or denied. bill WILL believe in GOD when he stands before HIM. I read THE BOOK!
