The Sacrament of Confession.

Nice try; wrong nonetheless. Try actually reading those passages. They say NOTHING about the establishment of confession as a sacrament.

After having actually read those passages, I still see in them the sacrament of confession.

We are to confess our sins and repent.

The Apostles and disciples to whom Jesus appears after His resurrection are given the Holy Spirit and told “Who so ever sins you forgive, they are forgiven and whose sins you retain, they are retained.

In the washing of the feet, Jesus is teaching the Apostles what they are to do for their brothers. Is there evidence in Scripture that the Apostles washed anyone’s feet?

But, listen to how Jesus responds to Peter, who at first rejects Jesus’ washing of his feet.

“[6] Then cometh he to Simon Peter: and Peter saith unto him, Lord, dost thou wash my feet?
[7] Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
[8] Peter saith unto him, Thou shalt never wash my feet. Jesus answered him, If I wash thee not, thou hast no part with me.
[9] Simon Peter saith unto him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head.

At first Peter resists, because he does not understand. Jesus tells him, he will understand hereafter, meaning from now on.

And so, Peter then wants him to wash his hands and his head, because Peter was nothing if not impetuous.

Then Jesus says to Peter, 10 Jesus said to him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you.” 11 For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”

He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet. Why does Jesus say this. Well, we know that because the roads were dusty, those who walked got dirty feet and bathing the feet was a common practice.

In terms of confession and reconciliation, the bath is baptism, so one who has been baptized has no need of another baptism. But, people sin in their walk through life and therefore, though they have been cleansed through the water of baptism, because they still sin, they have need of further cleansing.

Jesus tells Peter, they will do this same for their brothers, yet we don’t see the Apostles washing everyone’s feet in the NT.

So, it’s simple. Our baptism is the bath of which Jesus spoke and the “washing of our feet” is confession which the Apostles do for us as Jesus did for them.

****For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, “You are not all clean.”****

I find this passage curious. Is Jesus saying here that Judas was never baptized?
