The Doctrine of Temple Work (Mormonism - Open)
Ensign ^ | October 2003 | Elder David E. Sorensen

Posted on 10/26/2010 5:17:20 AM PDT by Colofornian

Snip

...Joseph Smith warned of the consequences when we fail to use the temples available to us: “Those Saints who neglect [temple work] in behalf of their deceased relatives, do it at the peril of their own salvation.”

Snip

A key function of temples is to perform ordinance work for our deceased ancestors. When we think of temple ordinances and the necessity to do them perfectly, without error...

“… For their salvation is necessary and essential to our salvation...they without us cannot be made perfect—neither can we without our dead be made perfect” (D&C 128:5, 15;...).

Consider the...vision of President Joseph F. Smith...:

“Thus was the gospel preached to those who had died in their sins...having rejected the prophets.

Snip

The Lord revealed through... Joseph: “All covenants, contracts, bonds, obligations, oaths, vows, performances, connections, associations, or expectations, that are not made and entered into and sealed by the Holy Spirit of promise, of him who is anointed, both as well for time and for all eternity, … through the medium of mine anointed, whom I have appointed on the earth to hold this power … are of no efficacy, virtue, or force in and after the resurrection from the dead; for all contracts that are not made unto this end have an end when men are dead” (D&C 132:7).

Snip

...One of the great privileges we have is the wearing of the garment...

...The garment, … when properly worn, will serve as a protection against temptation and evil.

“It is expected that members will wear the garment both night and day...Members should not adjust the garment or wear it contrary to instructions in order to accommodate different styles of clothing...The garment should not be removed for activities which might reasonably be done with the garment worn beneath the clothing...

Besides, who can resist a movie Charleton Heston or Claude Raines? Are you Jewish?

Heston was the best.Yes, I am Jewish. Just trying to point out that the folks that go on and on about Mormonism as being a cult are themselves part of a cult. Mormonism is a cult of Christianity and Christianity is a cult of Judaism. (cult meaning non-orthodox off-shoot or sub group)Many Christians will compare their belief system to mormonism, jehovah witness and other such known Christian cults but do not adequately stop to ask the question, why do Jews not accept Jesus? They may look at that question from the Chrisitan apologetic view but seldom from the Jewish apologetic view point.

You said Mormons are like Lucifer who was condemned to hell. I know what you said.

So . . . you don’t think all Mormons are going to hell. This is great news. Thank you.

I’ve been thinking about the Jews lately. Since most Christians believe in the Trinity, then they believe that Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father and the Holy Ghost are the same God. Therefore, since the Jews believe in the Old Testament, then all of you guys are “saved” because Jesus Christ is the same as God the Father of the Old Testament. Jews also have the Holy Ghost.

Too bad I have heard Christians say that all the Jews are going to hell because they don’t believe in Jesus Christ, the Messiah. Well, you are in good company, because they like to condemn all Mormons to hell on this site.

Join the club!

>>Seek truth. Find out for yourself.<<
I have sought the truth, I have found out for myself. Mormons are committing the same sin that Satan/Lucifer did that caused God to cast him out of heaven and damn him to eternity in hell. He believed like the Mormons do now that they could become like God.
The Mormons today try to convince people that they too can become like God just as Lucifer did with Adam and Eve.

Now, would you please show me where in that post I said “Mormons are like Lucifer who was condemned to hell”?

Can you not read where it says “committing the same sin”? Do you not realize the difference?

Well I get the Jewish viewpoint and never dained to argue with them. Not really in my best interest to mess with God's chosen people. Besides, old joke "For as few Jews as there are it seems like I must know about half them". Funniest time was when I had my Seder 20 years ago and asked "Why is this night any different?". Honest question and I didn't know the answer but the whole table exploded with laughter and I later found out the joke as I read "Why is this night any different". This time I laughed and the whole table laughed again. Been doing Seder for 20 years, Hannukah, Yom Kippur and Shabat. I got my own collection of Kippahs and I think it's time to get another one. Why do I tell you this? Because it seems I can ask a Jew any question about Judaism or what it means to them and there isn't offense. How would I ever learn but for someone else answering the question? The same goes for asking Catholics "What's that?" or "Why is that important to you?", they simply answer and I now have more information about a subject. I don't ridicule them or insult them. I don't tell them they are wrong. How would I know anyway? I was never given the imprimatur or perfect knowledge of judgement for a good reason. I ain't no good at it. If, however, you ask a Mormon anything they want to shape the conversation their way. That isn't how people communicate especially adults. Heck, they are taught this deceptive tactic from day one of the MTC and here is probably the most grating man I never did meet teaching missionaries how to answer a question: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zA-rZQB-xQ So it's part of their constructed imprint and Bob Millet isn't a nobody in LDS.

Dr. Robert L. Millet (born December 30, 1947 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana) is a professor of ancient scripture and emeritus Dean of Religious Education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Millet is a distinguished Latter-day Saint author and speaker with more than 60 published works on virtually all aspects of Mormonism.

He appears frequently as a commentator on BYUTV and in other visible roles at assorted media outlets as Manager of Outreach and Interfaith Relations for Church Public Affairs. As a religion instructor, Millet has become known for his "milk before meat" approach of avoiding less popular LDS doctrines when discussing the church with non-Mormons.[1]

Millet is considered one of the foremost scholars on the Joseph Smith Translation (also known as the Inspired Version) of the Bible.

Millet received a Ph.D. from Florida State University in biblical studies and contemporary theology and a Master's Degree in Psychology from BYU. Millet has been a member of BYU faculty since 1983.

Here is the Wikipedia link for any further perusal: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_L._Millet Like I said on another post. I wouldn't be so concerned with LDS but for their saying on the one hand they don't deride traditional Christianity while trying to co-opt Christianity so they can become more mainstream. They will tell you they have more missionaries than any other religion, as proof of their wondrous God inspired religion. As if that would prove anything but a rather large claim when one consider the whole of each organization with some 2 billion Christians of collective denominations and maybe 12 million but more like 6 million active members, maybe. Could be my WAG but so are their claims. But I don't see 6 million LDS'rs having more missionaries against 2 billion Christians. But that's part of their hyperbole. Same thing with their missionaries who are encouraged to seek out new converts with a foundational belief in the Bible and Christ. They are then told they in an apostate state and missionaries are encouraged not to engage well informed Christians "For they are too learned and cannot hear". Well, that's just me and I'm about tone deaf. To my way of thinking they could do themselves a whole lot of good by stop talking smack about Christians but then there is no restoration so I don't seem them doing that. Oh well.

Too bad I have heard Christians say that all the Jews are going to hell because they don’t believe in Jesus Christ, the Messiah.

Look it up, Sandy.  It's in YOUR scripture; too.

John 3:16-18

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And HERE; Too.

THE FIRST BOOK OF NEPHI
HIS REIGN AND MINISTRY
CHAPTER 14

An angel tells Nephi of the blessings and cursings to fall upon the Gentiles—There are only two churches: the Church of the Lamb of God and the church of the devil—The saints of God in all nations are persecuted by the great and abominable church—The apostle John shall write concerning the end of the world. Between 600 and 592 B.C.

1 And it shall come to pass, that if the aGentiles shall hearken unto the Lamb of God in that day that he shall manifest himself unto them in word, and also in bpower, in very deed, unto the ctaking away of their dstumbling blocks—
2 And harden not their hearts against the Lamb of God, they shall be numbered among the seed of thy father; yea, they shall be anumbered among the house of Israel; and they shall be a bblessed people upon the cpromised land forever; they shall be no more brought down into captivity; and the house of Israel shall no more be confounded.
3 And that great apit, which hath been digged for them by that great and abominable church, which was founded by the devil and his children, that he might lead away the souls of men down to hell—yea, that great pit which hath been digged for the destruction of men shall be filled by those who digged it, unto their utter destruction, saith the Lamb of God; not the destruction of the soul, save it be the casting of it into that bhell which hath no end.
4 For behold, this is according to the acaptivity of the devil, and also according to the justice of God, upon all those who will work wickedness and abomination before him.
5 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, Nephi, saying: Thou hast beheld that if the Gentiles repent it shall be awell with them; and thou also knowest concerning the covenants of the Lord unto the house of Israel; and thou also hast heard that whoso brepenteth not must perish.
6 Therefore, awo be unto the Gentiles if it so be that they harden their hearts against the Lamb of God.
7 For the time cometh, saith the Lamb of God, that I will work a great and a amarvelous work among the children of men; a bwork which shall be everlasting, either on the one hand or on the other—either to the convincing of them unto cpeace and dlife eternal, or unto the deliverance of them to the hardness of their hearts and the blindness of their minds unto their being brought down into captivity, and also into destruction, both temporally and spiritually, according to the ecaptivity of the devil, of which I have spoken.
8 And it came to pass that when the angel had spoken these words, he said unto me: Rememberest thou the acovenants of the Father unto the house of Israel? I said unto him, Yea.
9 And it came to pass that he said unto me: Look, and behold that great and abominable church, which is the mother of abominations, whose founder is the adevil.
10 And he said unto me: Behold there are save atwo churches only; the one is the church of the Lamb of God, and the bother is the church of the cdevil; wherefore, dwhoso belongeth not to the church of the Lamb of God belongeth to that great church, which is the mother of abominations; and she is the ewhore of all the earth.
11 And it came to pass that I looked and beheld the whore of all the earth, and she sat upon many awaters; and she had dominion over ball the earth, among all nations, kindreds, tongues, and people.
12 And it came to pass that I beheld the church of the Lamb of God, and its numbers were afew, because of the wickedness and abominations of the whore who sat upon many waters; nevertheless, I beheld that the church of the Lamb, who were the saints of God, were also upon ball the face of the earth; and their dominions upon the face of the earth were small, because of the wickedness of the great whore whom I saw.
13 And it came to pass that I beheld that the great mother of abominations did gather together multitudes upon the face of all the earth, among all the nations of the Gentiles, to afight against the Lamb of God.
14 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the power of the Lamb of God, that it descended upon the saints of the church of the Lamb, and upon the covenant people of the Lord, who were scattered upon all the face of the earth; and they were aarmed with brighteousness and with the cpower of God in great glory.
15 And it came to pass that I beheld that the wrath of God was apoured out upon that great and abominable church, insomuch that there were wars and rumors of wars among all the bnations and kindreds of the earth.
16 And as there began to be awars and rumors of wars among all the nations which belonged to the mother of abominations, the angel spake unto me, saying: Behold, the wrath of God is upon the mother of harlots; and behold, thou seest all these things—
17 And when the aday cometh that the bwrath of God is poured out upon 1 nephi 14 of all the earth, whose founder is the devil, then, at that day, the cwork of the Father shall commence, in preparing the way for the fulfilling of his dcovenants, which he hath made to his people who are of the house of Israel.
18 And it came to pass that the angel spake unto me, saying: Look!
19 And I looked and beheld a man, and he was dressed in a white robe.
20 And the angel said unto me: Behold aone of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
21 Behold, he shall asee and bwrite the cremainder of these things; yea, and also many things which have been.
22 And he shall also write concerning the end of the world.
23 Wherefore, the things which he shall write are just and true; and behold they are written in the abook which thou beheld proceeding out of the mouth of the Jew; and at the time they proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, or, at the time the book proceeded out of the mouth of the Jew, the things which were written were plain and pure, and most bprecious and easy to the understanding of all men.
24 And behold, the things which this aapostle of the Lamb shall write are many things which thou hast seen; and behold, the remainder shalt thou see.
25 But the things which thou shalt see hereafter thou shalt not write; for the Lord God hath ordained the apostle of the Lamb of God that he should awrite them.
26 And also others who have been, to them hath he shown all things, and they have awritten them; and they are bsealed up to come forth in their purity, according to the truth which is in the Lamb, in the own due time of the Lord, unto the house of Israel.
27 And I, Nephi, heard and bear record, that the name of the apostle of the Lamb was aJohn, according to the word of the angel.
28 And behold, I, Nephi, am forbidden that I should write the remainder of the things which I saw and heard; wherefore the things which I have written sufficeth me; and I have written but a small part of the things which I saw.
29 And I bear record that I saw the things which my afather saw, and the angel of the Lord did make them known unto me.
30 And now I make an end of speaking concerning the things which I saw while I was acarried away in the spirit; and if all the things which I saw are not written, the things which I have written are btrue. And thus it is. Amen.

"For they are too learned and cannot hear".

The flip side must be:

"Seek out ignorant folks; for they don't know enough about Christianity to say we are wrong."

These threads are always helpful — they help bolster my belief that Mormonism is NOT Christian despite their public insistence that it is.

Thanks for taking a moment to say so Moon. Those of us who contend for Chrisianity on these threads get very weary and discouraged sometimes but try to remember that there are lurkers like you.
