Marbren -- you may be right, all d-fendr is pointing out is that in the 5th century when Germanic tribes invaded the Roman Empire, when White Huns invaded India, when the Han dynasty fell, it seemed like end times then.

Ditto for when the Muslim hordes erupted out of Arabia in the 600s and within fifty years conquered Christian lands from Morocco to Iraq and from Sudan (yes it was Christian until the 15th century) up to Greece and when they over-ran that super-power Persia and it ceased to exist in a matter of months.

Ditto for 999 AD when people were afraid.

All of these times seemed like the end-times, even more than 1844 (Miller/Seventh Day Adventist time!).

That end times will come is, IMHO, little protection, if anything it adds to the problem, give it more to hang the rest onto. And since prophecy and eschatology is often mixed with a great deal of symbology ( e.g., Revelations) an extremely wide range of theories can “fit.” Think Koresh and dozens of others. Think of all the various tribs and mils and variations, and “Left Behind” etc. There are waves of Apocalyptic times or times when great numbers thought the end was near, the time of Jesus was one such. There have been several others that have come and gone.

Several great mass movements have flown on these times and predictions - only to crash when it didn’t happen. A friend of mine’s mother was caught up in one about 20 years back. Ended up broke and abandoned in the desert.

The susceptible types you mention... I, humbly, think I can spot the most prone. One comes to mind is a friend, former AoG, who believes darn near every conspiracy theory. He lost a great deal of money on one such - non religion related, but same basic appeal - there’s a reality behind the reality that only a few can see... Those who believe there’s conspiracies behind most everything - those are the type of personality that I think is most susceptible.

thanks very much for your reply.

Thanks for the apropos quote. Another, similar, same source:

“The madman is not the man who has lost his reason. He is the man who has lost everything except his reason”

Nah, more like pointing out how the Unitarians do not believe in the Trinity and the UUs also deny the divinity of Christ. aNd then one of their own is accepted as a Protestant because he denies the Trinity using sola scriptura.

Now, you tell me, how does someone who believes in that, then mock the mysteries of religion?

I think both sides of that issue are too wrapped up in Mystical spirituality stuff....In my opinion these distract greatly from the work we are suppose to be doing...which is spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ....learning and loving Him more and cleaning up our own acts. Not to mention building others up in the thruths of what Christ would have us know...and those are plainly understood.

As for people getting their pants in knots on these threads over others believes etc. Well, I love the passion and debates no matter how heated they get....as long as it remains on topic or another interesting topic is interjected. I think it helps us all to vent a bit with the outside world we contend with everyday.....we operate, after all, in enemy territory from the moment we open our eyes in the morning til we close them at night. People should not take the remarks so seriously.

However we all do believe that we should stand against error in the things of the Lord....so of course things will heat up...the second problem that occurs is we fail terribly at finding just exactly the bottom line truth that might be revealed in these debates.....I think the Lords good spirit leaves the debate and we all loose out then...

I have noted the threads seem to get into these you said she said etc. places..and we each come to the defense of others...but this too is good I think...I've honestly come up with some great comebacks I can use in the outside world when this happens. After all we are here not just to learn and debate....but I believe as important sharpen out stance and our backbones to stand in the face of those who oppose Christ in the outside world.

The amazing thing is we all come back into the fray...now why is that? There is a love of those who are in Christ among us thru His Spirit that is here....like brothers and sisters is families we get into fights and even at times leave a scratch here and there....but when push comes to shove I have no doubt all Christians will unite agains the foe....

And yes even with Quix and those who can dig at us wher we don't want to be dug at.....Everyone who addresses him just keeps coming back and continues to debate or slander..whatever the mood might be at the time....How come? Why bother if it is so bothersome how people might express themselves? Because despite all Christians do have something to say and there are good minds here.....maybe some a little worn from time and tide...maybe meds etc. get in the way for others....maybe some not as educated or leanered..............everyone mispells!

... But we all come back....that dear friend is the Lord.

I just didn't think that communications was the real topic.

Oh I don't either. But it was a topic that didn't devolve into screaming at people. If I walk into a room full of people who are already shouting at each other what purpose is served by adding my voice to the general cacophony?

Even Elias didn't have the prophets of baal put to death until after the fireworks were over. Let each side make their case "after their manner" and we'll see what happens after midday.

I don't know why you would take such exception to what you consider a misguided exaggeration when you remained completely silent about the following, one, incidentally, which has been made in one form or another many times on this thread.

When my head is swimming I try to keep my mouth shut..

I think there are SOME Unitarians here (in the technical sense -- some Arians anyway) I don't think there's a single quaternitarian nor anyone who thinks that Mary does all the work of Christ.

And as for thinking that Mary does all the work of Christ -- It's not even worth trying....

What I’m adding is MHO that the same folks can be caught up in a wrapper of New Age or of End Times, both of which lend themselves to a wide range of fantastic possibilities

My point is to get people to think outside the box about the coming great end time deception. IMHO there are also skeptics and people in denial that are at risk. We do have standards. God's Word, The Holy Spirit to guide us, and our focal point, Our Lord Jesus Christ.

Keep Your Eyes on Jesus.

Here is one possibility that is more down to earth. Let's say a loaf of bread is soon going to cost $5000. Will faith be shaken?

It is understandable that one who has not been associated with the Catholic Church for quite some time would be unaware that the cup has been offered for a few, in terms of Church history, years.

No, it's not understandable, unless it is fair to conclude that said person is equally ignorant on other aspects of the Catholic Church as well. These "few years" have been the last several decades when all of us have been alive, not some event in the distant past. Basic errors like that don't lend to credibility on other matters dealing with the Catholic Church.

Or did Rome change that, too?

I heard they are going to stop offering wine to conform to your posts.

All of these times seemed like the end-times,

Yes, to the people of those era's I'd agree, including the deciples as they asked "when shall we see"....
