US President Barack Obama may meet with Pope Benedict XVI in July when he is in Italy for a Group of Eight summit, the ANSA news agency reported Sunday, without citing its sources.

It would most likely take place as the G8 leaders wrap up their July 8-10 summit to be held in L'Aquila, the Italian town devastated by an earthquake in April that killed some 299 people, the agency said.

ANSA added that "the most likely date would be July 10, although there has been no official confirmation."

It would the first meeting between the pope and the US leader.

Hopefully the Holy Father will be out of town on business that day.

But if he's not, I would hope that he would give the same to Obama that he did to Pelosi (i.e., the denial of a photo-op). After all, if 0 wishes to meet with the Holy Father, cameras shouldn't matter very much.

They can brainstorm over the philistinian state that they both have called for and agree to.

If the Pope doesn’t give him a VERY cold shoulder, then you can say the “morals” of the Catholic Church have fallen to the level of the “once moral” Espiscopal Church ... I was heading for the former because I have lost “faith” in the latter.

Well, as head of a foreign state....

Unfortunately this is one that the Holy Father is going to have to endure. I just hope he has an exorcist nearby. And remember, meeting doesn't mean agreement or approval, just that they are meeting. Frankly, it's part of the pope's job to do that.

My thoughts exactly. I hope Obama doesn't vomit pea soup all over the Pope.

"The pope better bring his lunch it’s going to be a long one." Unless he's totally possessed - then he's a hopeless cause.

"VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Benedict XVI will welcome U.S. President Barack Obama to the Vatican July 10 for an audience scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

-SNIP-

Although Pope Benedict usually meets heads of state and government in the morning, the Vatican agreed to host Obama's first visit to the papal palace the evening before he flies to Africa.

-SNIP-

Discussions between popes and U.S. presidents usually focus on common concerns regarding world events and the church's concerns over issues or policies with special moral relevance. So in addition to discussing ongoing tensions in the Middle East, especially the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the situation in Iraq, Pope Benedict likely will bring up his concerns regarding abortion policy in the United States and renewed government permission for embryonic stem-cell research."

Do you suppose Zero will kiss the Pope's ring?
