Both are responses, not causes. They are the manifestations of a change of will (heart).

**Furthermore, without the action of believing or faith on our part God can do nothing for us**

God saves us. We don’t save ourselves.

We can’t do anything without God acting first.

***Furthermore, without the action of believing or faith on our part God can do nothing for us, otherwise, why would our Savior state the following: ***

God is helpless before us. He can do nothing. WE CONTROL GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In all seriousness, nothing can happen until God allows it. Faith cannot happen before God interviens in your life.

Concider this: Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

Faith cannot come UNTIL you hear the word. This ONLY happens when God puts someone there for you to hear from. So it all comes from God, and not of yourself.

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Believes WHAT????

The word that was prepared for him FROM GOD. You can’t believe in what you haven’t heard about. You can’t believe in something you have no knowledge about. Belief comes from GOD.

On this we can agree, however, it still does not remove the responsibility of the sinner to obey god and believe the gospel as John states in the following scripture:

John 3:15 (Whole Chapter)

That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

John 3:16 (Whole Chapter)

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

There is always a personal choice involved.

God is a fair and impartial, but loving, God.

He does not blithely give advantages to one soul over another.

We both as sinners and as born-again sinners will have a choice every day of our lives to either believe God or not to believe God. This is how God measures are obedience and rewards us. This comes straight from the mouth of Jesus as the scriptures I have posted on this thread show.

This is the one failing of Calvinism is that it removes the choice from the individual and removes the glory of the creator’s creation.

Once you are regenerated, you can believe. No problem with that. In fact, I will state that, once you are regenerated, you WILL believe.

Also is this a new translation apart from the NASV or the NIV?

A revision of the RSV, putting it in the family of revisions of the KJV, instead of an outright new translation.

That should have been:

And yet the first words of Jesus's public ministry were "Repent and Believe"

Should have been "Jesus' public ministry".

***This is the one failing of Calvinism is that it removes the choice from the individual and removes the glory of the creator’s creation.***

No, it’s like this...

An unregenerated man can choose between sinning and not sinning in any particular circumstance.
A regenerated man can choose between sinning, not sinning, and glorifying God.

In other words:
Unregenrated man can choose to punch someone in the nose, or not punch someone in the nose. Sin or not sin.
Regenerated man can choose to punch someone in the nose, not punch someone in the nose, or tell them about Jesus. Sin, not sin, or glorify God.

That is the difference.

Or...
An unregenerated man will always choose sinning in one way or another, because his mind is not, nor can be, set on glorifying God.
A regenerated man can choose between sinning, not sinning, and glorifying God.

Romans 8:6-10

For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.

That’s what I said. Remember, an unregenerated man CAN choose to not sin, in a particular circumstance, but it doesn’t make him righteous.

Good to know, thanks for posting this one Gamecock. My husband was given this Bible last weekend and I recently purchased the Ligonier ESV Study Bible. I don’t care for it because the print is too small and too light for my aging eyes. I’ll have to check out hubby’s.
