Canada Catholics 'ordain' women (self-excommunicating Catholic alert!)

An ordination ceremony that openly defies Roman Catholic doctrine has taken place in Toronto.

Five women and a married man, all Roman Catholics, have been ordained as priests and deacons by a female Catholic bishop.

However, the Vatican says it will not recognise either the ordinations or the group carrying them out.

The ordination ceremony was held at a Protestant church on the outskirts of Toronto known for its liberal views.

Priestly 'sacrament'

The building was packed with an enthusiastic congregation.

They watched as Bishop Patricia Fresen, one of the most well-known figures in the Roman Catholic Womenpriests movement, led the five women and one married man through a number of rituals to mark their ordination.

Bishop Fresen was herself ordained in a secret ceremony in Spain in 2003.

But the archdiocese of Toronto said that the organisation responsible for the ordinations had no affiliation or any dialogue with the Roman Catholic Church.

It said that ordaining men into the priesthood was a sacrament that cannot be changed.

But the bishops in the Womenpriests movement claim they are part of the Church's valid apostolic succession, because Catholic bishops in good standing ordained them secretly.

What a transparent attempt to display the RCC as chaotic and in disarray. This group is clearly not part of the RCC, having been excommunicated. How is it that the report describes them as if they are a part of it?

Me thinks there is an agenda in the writing. Looks like the “reporter” really wants to stir up controversy where none exists. As far as I can tell, the RCC is quite clear on the standing of these people: they have no standing.

It might as well have said “Patricia Fresen has won the Miss World Contest, The Nobel Peace Prize and the Gold Medal in figure skating” cause she has as much chance of being those things as she has in being a ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP!

Latae Sentia(sic) excommunication

That would be latae sententiae excommunication.

Can. 1329 §1 Where a number of persons conspire together to commit an offence, and accomplices are not expressly mentioned in the law or precept, if ferendae sententiae penalties were constituted for the principal offender, then the others are subject to the same penalties or to other penalties of the same or a lesser gravity.

§2 In the case of a latae sententiae penalty attached to an offence, accomplices, even though not mentioned in the law or precept, incur the same penalty if, without their assistance, the crime would not have been committed, and if the penalty is of such a nature as to be able to affect them; otherwise, they can be punished with ferendae sententiae penalties.
