Sen. John Edwards blames President George Bush for the net loss of almost 2.7 million jobs during his tenure in the White House.
Politicians properly can be challenged about whatever happens "on their watch." They can be asked what they might have done that contributed to loss of jobs -- and what they failed to do that might have stopped the economic hemorrhaging.
Thousands of those almost 2.7 million lost jobs disappeared from North Carolina.
We can be comforted by Sen. Edwards' promise to create five million new jobs during his first years as president. In order to keep from mixing apples and oranges, we must assume that the senator means five million "net" jobs.
That would be welcome news indeed!
But there is one disturbing element here.
John Edwards has been in the U.S. Senate in Washington longer than George Bush has been in the White House.
Where was the senator during these years in which jobs were disappearing from his state and from across the nation?
What tangible programs was he championing in the Senate to keep these jobs from going overseas, to create new jobs and new training programs for his constituents back home and elsewhere?
John Edwards is a lawyer who has won national recognition and respect for his brilliance and eloquence that won hundreds of millions of dollars in lawsuits for himself and his clients.
Surely one of his persuasiveness should have been able to win over fellow members of Congress in a crusade to protect jobs and the economy.
In all probability the senator will have some convincing explanation. And should he win the nomination and the presidency, and produce those five million jobs in his first two years, he can be assured that he will earn the undying gratitude of his homefolks and those throughout the nation.
And the skeptics among us will grovel in embarrassment as we apologize for our cynicism about why he kept his economic magic a secret while serving in the Senate.
Can they start with Senator Edwards himself???
And, this citizen blames a recession that began in 2000 when the "smoke and mirror" economy of the 1990s collapsed---compounded by an attack on our homeland that was in part aimed at maulling our economy.
Go do what you were born to do, Sen. Edwards---comb your hair!
Unfortunately Tax-chick, if it has to do with the DMV more than likely it will be instituted by our other Senator. The one who gave us mandatory seat belt laws, the one who gave us airbags and third brake lights pushing up the price of vehicles, and of course lest we forget the one who stood against the Reagan administration's push to abolish the nationwide 55 mph speed limit. She's 'done' much much more for us (more like to us) but those are just a few of the 'wonderful' things she's done as it relates to our vehicles.
And yet there are some that would call her a conservative...
Raise taxes. It worked for Clinton.
