Real oatmeal (not instant) is the best breakfast food there is. A principal virtue of the fiber contained in oatmeal is that it encapsulates the starches and slows down digestion. What you get is a steady trickle of blood sugar that lasts for hours, which is why oatmeal has a reputation for sticking to your ribs. On the other extreme is something like Kelloggs Cornflakes, which digests so rapidly you might as well tilt your head back and pour cane sugar down your throat.
