Either McClintock or Schwarzenegger Likely Winner in California if Other Dropped Out
With Arnold Schwarzenegger the Republican front-runner in the California gubernatorial contest, many GOP officials have pressured California State Sen. Tom McClintock to drop out of the race, fearing he will divide the Republican vote and allow Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante to win. A CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll, conducted over the past weekend, shows that McClintock does indeed draw support away from Schwarzenegger, though not enough to deprive the actor of the lead among probable voters. But the poll also shows that if Schwarzenegger were not in the race, McClintock would likely be in first place by a substantial margin, rather than behind Bustamante.

Thanks... I'd love to see these ArnBots call JimRob a closet Bustamonte supporter like they have to anyone else who sticks up for Tom McClintock.

Pray tell, when Arnold has a commanding lead with one week to go, why would drop out?

If he had a detectable sense of humor, I'd say he was being wry.

But... no chance!

We're all sick of this "RINO" and "NeoCon" bullcrap around here. Anyone who uses those terms should be hurled into a volcanic abyss or rocketed into deep space.

Back on July 22, 2003, Issa was called a RINO which shocked me! It has gotten worse from that date forward. Makes you wonder just who was responsible for the word getting out to McC followers to use the word RINO because it is everywhere and used to describe conservatives now! What does that make these McC folks if conservatives are RINOs? How far right are these people when they say if they are ignored they will stay home? Are we talking about the far right Pres Reagan brought into the Party in 1980 that has caused Republicans so much trouble including Reagan since then?

The damned, implacable PURISTS, need to go, or the majority of FREEPERs do.

You mean the sanctimonious "principled" ones?

PKM: I agree with you --- If a candidate is labeled "principled" I'm also voting for the other Republican!

The Libertarians, here, have been screaming down the roof tops, about their " PRINCIPLES " dor years. The Patsies did too, and so do some of those who support the Constitution Party. The same thing with the " PURISTS "; often one in the same.

As for RINO, those who use it now, misuse the term, don't understand what its actual meaning is, and have corrupted that term beyond recognition ! That and neocon ( also misused maladroitly ! ), are now amongst the epitaphs used by the implacable unappeasables.

FR will NEVER return to the days when we were all just Conservatives. The Balkinisation of FR, is here to saty and shall, IMHO, only continue to get worse.

I'll be the first to say that I disagree with Snowe & Chafee's positions on the Bush tax cuts and their voting record on the environment. I also generally disagree with RINO positions on affirmative action & immigration. But without RINOs, there would be no Republican majority, and the Republicans would be relegated to minority status.

Personally, I think Arnold will be a MORE conservative Governor than many Freepers suspect. I think he is smart enough to know that in a general election, you need to appeal to the center to win.

I don't share your pessimism. I look for better days ahead, for California, the Republican Party, both at the state and national level, and for conservatism.

You are free to look for better days ahead, normally I feel that Conservatives are in general too pessimistic, but those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, you must understand there comes a point when its not optimism vs pessimism, its more akin to this.

Currently, we can't afford, literally, to cross over the precipice and tax our way out of this position. Unless we make stark cuts, before June, there won't be any more wiggle room, and we are destined to jump off that cliff with a huge weights attached to our leg. The next recession is going to be way worse the 91, and with Bush in the state he is, he can't afford that.

The Republican Party can't afford that.
