I don't doubt that your family is fine and upstanding members of society. I would never attempt to claim that "religious folks" have some sort of lock on doing what it right. We all know that's not true.

I guess what I am driving at is what makes something right? In my case it's becuse God made it that way. What defines something as right or wrong? Society? Yourself?

Both. Society is a reflection of history, and bases its codified rules on what has worked and not worked in the past. Individuals, too, define right and wrong based on experience. Only some individuals, psychopaths, do not seem to have this capacity. Deities are handy devices for societies to lend some sense of external authority to their rules. Most often this is done when the rules don't make a lot of sense to the average person. Do no harm to others unless you are in danger. That is really the only rule that is needed. All others follow.
