Well, I was really asking what you meant? In this specific case, a hypothesis is purely conjecture. There is no doubt that the vent is there and there are microbes on it, but that is not a hypothesis. A hypothesis would be that microbes are there because it is a source of raw materials and energy. It is no more, at this point, than the volcanic vents we already know of. The particular compound they mention as a starting material is an igneous compound. That is something one expects around volcanic areas.
