Isn't that just rebuttal language that one usually finds on state propositions?

This is the lead into the statement in question:

"The answer of the officer to be recalled is as follows:"

It appears to be Davis himself whining about the recall.

It looks like those petitions were hacked somehow.

OMG! You are right!

The site must have been hacked!!!

I just had a couple of people sign that petition, good thing I didn't mail it.

After reading your post I looked at it, and sure enough there is that bogus last paragraph. I am sure that is not part of the original petition, it's clear from the wording.

The things Davis stoops to, to invalidate the recall effort...

But you are right. This is RED ALERT!!!

Whoever wrote the above email message doesn't have a clue what they are talking about.

California's Election Code Section 11023 requires that: (a) Within seven days after the filing of the notice of intention, the officer sought to be recalled may file with the elections official, or in the case of a state officer, the Secretary of State, an answer, in not more than 200 words, to the statement of the proponents.

Furthermore, Election Code Section 11041 requires that: (a) ...Before any signature may be affixed to a recall petition, each page of each section must bear all of the following in no less than 8-point type:
(3) The answer of the officer sought to be recalled, if any. If the officer sought to be recalled has not answered, the petition shall so state.

That's why the recall petition contains that rebuttal statement by Gray Davis. The recall petition is perfectly legal, and has already gone through two rounds of technical revisions by the Secretary of State.

The answer of the officer to be recalled is as follows:  IF YOU SIGN THIS PETITION IT MAY LEAD TO A SPECIAL ELECTION THIS SUMMER COSTING US TAXPAYERS AN ADDITIONAL $20-40 MILLION.  Last November...

That was the reply by Governor Davis.

Maybe recall petitions in CA are required to print a reply by the office holder on the petition?

That is curious, though.

According to http://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/ca/story/6114271p-7070011c.html

"Salazar said state law requires an official rebuttal like the one filed by Davis to be circulated along with petitions seeking support for a recall."

That's Gray's rebuttal. The petition is not a hoax and it hasn't been hacked. However, IIRC, there is a fake recall site out there.

What happens if Davis resigns just before the recall election?

Does the Lt. Governor take over and is the election cancelled?

I signed the petition here in San Francisco at Safeway on Market Street. I believe that I read the language and I don't believe that the one at Safeway was a hoax. I'd like to know though...wonder if I could find out?

ALL of the Petitions say that. Pull up the petitions from which ever recall effort your do support and you will discover it to be true It is the RESPONSE that the constitution allows Davis to submit.

You are screwing up the recall effort with this thread. Please ask the moderator to pull this thread. The allegation is flat-out in error.

Lee Rodgers on KSFO this AM had a guy on that saw a table with recall Davis written on it in front of a Wal Mart. He went up to it and looked at the petition and saw that was a petition to NOT recall Davis. Then a woman comes up to sign a recall petition and he mentions to her its not a recall petition and the guys at the table started to threaten him. Evidently these were union goons planted to confuse people and get phoney signatures. Be very careful what you sign. These libs will do anything to deceive.

This petition is legitamate. The rumors, about a bogus petition being passed off as the real thing, are greatly exaggerated. The negative text is just Gray Davis's rebuttal to the recall drive.

We have to stop looking for conspiricies around every corner. Let's just get this recall on the ballot and leave our tin foil hats at home.
