DENVER -- Dozens of fans walked out of a Pearl Jam concert after lead singer Eddie Vedder took a mask of President Bush and impaled it on a microphone stand. Several concertgoers booed and shouted Tuesday night for Vedder to shut up as he told the crowd he was against the war and Bush. He impaled the mask during the encore of the band's opening show of a U.S. tour. "It was like he decapitated someone in a primal ritual and stuck their head on a stick," fan Keith Zimmerman said. Vedder used a Bush mask in Australia and Japan to perform the song "Bushleaguer," from the band's latest album, "Riot Act." The song's lyrics say, "He's not a leader, he's a Texas leaguer." During the show, Vedder said: "Just to clarify... we support the troops." "We're just confused on how wanting to bring them back safely all of a sudden becomes non-support," he said. "We love them. They're not the ones who make the foreign policy .... Let's hope for the best and speak our opinions." Pearl Jam manager Kelly Curtis could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

Not quite the same situation as the Dixie Chicks. The core audience for the Dixie Chicks (and country music in general) is overwhelmingly conservative. Country music, NASCAR and air shows are sort of in the same category. You would get a real ass-kicking if you showed up with a "No Blood for Oil" T-shirt at any one of those events.

On the other hand, Pearl Jam's core audience is from the big cities - the "red" areas, if you know what I mean. Most of the audience will eat that anti-Bush stuff up.

I voted singers should keep their mouths shut. Thats especially true if their views don't represent the views of all bandmates involved. I wouldn't want one person speaking on behalf of me. My own band keeps political views off the stage. It's a good policy for us. Reason? We don't all agree!

I know you're right. On the other hand, during the Vietnam war, no one got up and walked out on Country Joe & the Fish or any of those other anti-war groups. 70+% of Americans are pro-Bush on the Iraq issue. I'm guessing this cuts into even Pearl Jam's audience.
