It certainly did the trick for Sergeant First Class Stan Kryla, my Drill Sergeant in basic training nearly four decades ago. It appears it still does.

By the time I went through basic training, they weren't allowed to swear at us, so my TI called us her little heathens. That was 23 years ago. I can only imagine what kind of namby-pamby stuff must go on now, though I hope not.
