KC Radio Stations Dump Dixie Chicks
Yahoo! News ^ | March 14, 2003

If you tuned in to any of Kansas City's country music stations Thursday, you did not hear the Dixie Chicks.

Several stations in town have dumped the group's music over the lead singer's controversial comments about President Bush, KMBC's Jeremy Hubbard reported.

At a concert in London earlier this week, Natalie Maines, the band's lead singer said, " Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."

The Guardian, a London paper that reported the comment, said Maines' remark got the crowd cheering.

Many local residents, however, were not excited about the singer's point of view.

"If you guys play another Dixie Chicks song, we'll never listen to you again," one country music fan told KBEQ.

The station logged nearly 700 phone calls Thursday, denouncing Maines' comment.

The reactions from listeners were enough for programmers at all three big Kansas City country radio stations to pull the Dixie Chicks from their playlists, Hubbard reported.

But some Dixie Chicks fans didn't appreciate the ban.

"There are some artists that I like that have said things I don't agree with, but it doesn't stop me from listening to their music," said radio listener Shawn Peterson.

One radio station is even taking the boycott a step further.

Friday morning, one local station will take the ban a step further. They have invited their listeners to come to the station's studios and dump their Dixie Chicks CDs in a big trash can, Hubbard said.

The Dixie Chicks are scheduled to play to a sold out crowd in Kansas City next month.

That is extremely fascinating about these friendships. The fact that these same types didn't protest Clinton's crap in Kosovo makes me steam some times.

BTW, did you catch Ron Silver on Fox News last night supporting the war. Colmes made such a fool of himself, he was screaming at Silver, wouldn't let him speak. Typical liberal attack. Poor Silver probably had to disinfect his face from all of Colmes' spittle.

And watching Fleetwood Mac perform is moving. I have always been a big fan of theirs.

I won't boycott someone for simply disagreeing with me. I will, however, boycott anyone who goes overseas and slanders my country or president to a foreign public.

I have been on this road my entire life which is 49 years now. I just find it amusing to see conservatives jumping on the boycott wagon that was used by the Libs so frequently, without success most of the time. Some days lately we should call Freerepublic "Boycott Central". The products of the French, Germans, Canadians all deserve to be boycotted because their actions are repulsive. But pouring out wine you have already paid for or breaking your Chicks CD is silly but it's your money. In the past 2 or 3 days the Dixie Chicks have been posted countless times with 50 to 100+ rants over what chubby said. One of the reasons I've always been a conservative is because we always worked rationally and deliberately to get things done. So if the movement has developed into some reverse polarity Jesse Jackson side show, I might need to look for another wagon. By the way I heard that the French get 3 cents for every gallon of gas sold in the US. I'm going to drain the gas out of my car into the storm sewer and walk 26 miles to work every day. I heard this on Rush.

Yep, saw and heard Ron Silver on Hannity's show a few weeks ago. Glad to hear he is changing his liberal ways. I'd love to see Silver, James Woods, and Dennis Miller take on Mike Farrell, Jeannie Garafolo and Martin Sheen anyday!

BTW, I too love Fleetwood Mac. Rumor is, though, that Sheryl will be 'joining' them to replace Christine McVey on their next tour.

Right you are....Wide Open Spaces, one of their big hits, was written by Susan Gibson, who is in a real country band--The Groobees.

I'm not for censorship, but I don't blame these radio stations (privately-owned companies).
They are smart enough to realize those 700 phone calls are just the tip of a
"populist iceberg" that could make their stations into media Titanics.

I agree about Landslide -- Nathalie Maines is no Stevie Nicks.

a real country band would have never said this, these are tarts dressed up to sell records

1. I bet they didn't spend their XMAS vacation visiting and doing concerts for our
troops in the Middle East Theater like Darryl Worley (sp?) did.

2. Tarts? The only thing beautiful about these wing-nuts is their bank accounts
(or as Banker Drysdale used to say on "The Beverly Hillbillies": "Show me a
person with a million dollars, and I'll show you a beautiful person!")

BTW, a radio host in Mississippi said this morning that the "Chicks" are on tour because that's the only element of their career that makes any money. According to this host (Paul Gallo), the Dixie Chicks have a lousy record and marketing deal that pays them very little for their CD and merchandise sales. Judging from their comments about Bush, they sound like the kind of bimbos who'd sign a contract without reading the fine print. Here's a little news flash for the chicks: You might consider re-negotiating your recording deal. Something tells me there will be a lot of empty seats on the American leg of your tour, and I wouldn't count on making money from concerts when you come home....

They're going to have to do bag checks at the doors to make sure no one sitting in the first ten rows is carrying tomatoes or worse.

I keep picturing the country-bar scene in The Blues Brothers. In the case of this group, after showing their true colors, I don't think a rendition of Rawhide or Stand By Your Man is going to cut it.

"Have your wife listen to Patsy Cline albums. I can't stand most Country Music but the BIG EXCEPTION is Patsy Cline. I love everything she sings!"

Same here. I can't tolerate most country music. Don't forget about Gillian Welch's Time (The Revelator)" CD -- it's one of the best albums ever made.

It's not totally country, but a hybrid of country, blues and a few other genre's.
