The cheese thing started, I believe, when the Freeper OWK (IIRC) responded in a vanity thread "I like cheese!". The thread was inane and pointless and the response was an example of of a pointless and inane response. The phrase caught on and was a favorite reply on threads that were totally pointless. Pretty soon the whole moose thing started as a compliment to the "I like cheese" responses that were totally pointless. There were quite a few threads that had in-depth cheese and moose discussions which were entirely appropriate for lame vanities that pop up from time to time.
