Shades of Project Pluto back in the '50s. Pluto was a nuclear powered cruise missile - about the size of an SR-71 actually, that was to be a launching platform for nuclear bombs. We scrapped it because it was nothing more than a non-shielded reactor that would fly supersonic around the world many times at treetop level. The downside was that if it didn't kill everything below it with the radiation, the wake turbulence behind it would.
But in today's world, with so many 'allies' out there, who cares. Let it go and do its' job. I'll see if I can find some more info - that was a pretty cool idea.
