VANITY: US Atomic clock sych crash?

For about an hour around 4pm EST, both my wall clock that synchs to the atomic clock satellite signal, and my computer clock that pings atomic clock web sites, gave erratic responses.

They seem to be ok and in sych now, and I am posting this in case anyone else out there experienced the same thing.

The atomic clock has not been working in my area for several days now. When I saw your post it reminded to look for another version of atomic clock but just to be sure I checked it one more time and it is now up and functioning properly again.

My comp clock has been erratic for a couple of months. One morning it might be an hour or so slow, I'll set it, and it keeps losing time. Then one day it'll be right on. I don't get it.

I do have a cheapo "atomic clock" sitting near the desk, and it seems to be fine.

I've really got to get me one of them atomic clocks. Sounds like they're much more reliable than this MickeyMouse University watch I've been using.....

Kind of interesting - Wish you had posted when it was happening so I could have checked mine. Don't know what significance if any this might have. It does seem that problems with the system - in my experience - are rare.

The atomic clocks on department store shelves have notoriously crappy receivers. I can't explain your problems over the internet, but many atomic wall clocks and the like only set themselves once a day. If the signal's bad for a few days at the same time, it appears the the signal's been down continuously.

If you want a truly reliable time signal, the GPS-based indoor clocks with outside GPS antennas are a good bet, but be prepared to spend $$.

I've had this problem, too!

The time servers I visit (with a cool, free little utility called AboutTime) are:

NASA (ns.arc.nasa.gov , 128.102.16.2)
NIST (time.nist.gov , 192.43.244.18)
U.S. Naval Observatory (tick.usno.navy.mil , 192.5.41.40)

They've been timing out on me lately.

Anyone have any others?

I too have an atomic synch clock but didn't happen to look at it during that period

I first thought it was my wall clock being funky, not worth bothering FR with.

Then I did some maintenance on my PC here, rebooted, and saw the SAME anomaly when my synch utility came up.

Both clocks were resetting for Pacific time, instead of Eastern US time.

Once I finished tinkering, I posted.

My ROLEX seems to be keeping time just fine!

I think the timer service NNYer is synching to is a shortwave radio station - WWV in Fort Collins, CO.

My Sharper Image clock syncs to that radio signal, and seems to be accurate right now.
