I get a fair share of my news and latest going's-on about the 'militant atheists' from 2 highly dissimilar sources-- the Orthodox ping list on FR, and "the Exile". If you've never made it to the Exile's web page (and can ignore the lads' prurient fixations) the New Bosses sure don't seem to be much like the Old Bosses. Unlike our own, who seem to be giving us the worst of Both Worlds.

I'm familiar with Exile and really enjoyed reading their restaurant reviews, even, until I actually contacted them one day preparatory to a Moscow trip and found they were not just gay but but flaming little faggots and likely shrill little queens sort of gay. Very disappointing. I still find a lot of their articles most interesting even if their bent leaves them somewhat slanted as a rule.

I think the difference in the two-headed beast is that the one has been plagued with an especial case of hubris the whole time. The sort of hubris which -- with all due confidence -- leaves it secure somehow that it's superior and disables its ability to exact with "Clean Hands" the same toll from its own that it expects to collect with impunity from others. Additionally, it has the disadvantage this having kept the two faces going at all times instead of picking up just the one mask OR the other as circumstances warranted.

Thus, you've the smarmy and utterly stupid scenario that is our "most faithbased presidency ever" as headed by a man who calls Christ his favorite philosopher and who nails open the most profitable door to human nonpersonhood in the first televised address of his "pro-life" presidency.

Meanwhile, the militant atheists in Russia have unleashed all the nationalism and religious renewal imaginable ... under the auspices, naturally, of the State Religion. Not only does this lay the foundation for their "religious" war in Chechnya but it masks with perfectly believeable sincerity (mostly courtesy of truly devout grannies) the entirely cynical and staged Image that is Christ's visage on the "holy gate" of GUM department store directly opposite the tomb of the Mason Lenin or the Corporate Sponsors the state shook down for their breathtakingly spectacular rebuild of the Cathedral of Christ.

Wearing a hardhat, it was Yeltsin who placed the last brick in the edifice with Patriarch Alexei at his side. "Now all is as it should be." Yep ... you put the last brick in and you can rip the last brick out and the whole thing will collapse as neatly as the Evil Empire on the eve of Perestroika.

How else to explain the touting of the "saving graces of Western Materialism" with a straight face. I'm sure communist China and the former Soviet Union (both of whom do a brisk business selling babies with which to re-face the West as well as allow all their "former" republics to cash in on the same gravy train of protection money that are IMF payments and various investments, billion-dollar clean-ups of the Kola Peninsula and emergency aid injections into their black hole books) laugh all the way to the bank.
