It should be the YELLOW RIBBON. I'm tying one on my tree tomorrow for my son in Oman and for every man and woman in service. I would love to see them all over town. Also, in WWII if you had an a family in active duty you put a white star with a navy blue background in your window, and a gold one if you had lost someone. I'm not sure that is correct, but I read it recently (probably here on FR). Let's do Yellow ribbons everywhere FReepers.

YES! The yellow ribbon. Peaceniks all over the country are placing signs in their yard which state, "Peace is Patriotic." How could we counter that-and why should we? The old-fashioned yellow ribbon would do just fine. To me it would say to our troops, "You go in my stead, THANKS." Good suggestion...I am checking out my "arts & crafts" supplies now; I am sure I have yellow ribbon. I will put them on our pin oak trees out front for our armed service, so they will know. My next door neighbor with their "peace" sign will be none the wiser. (Her dog barks too much anyway.)

You are correct about the banners in WWII, although it was a blue star on a white background with red trim on the outside of the banner (I have about 20 or 30 variations in my collection). There were also various other "Victory" banners for those who supported the war effort but did not have a family member in service. Additionally, there were special banners for those folks who worked in civilian jobs that supported the war effort.

FWIW, if you DO have a family member serving, you can get a new version of the "family member in service" star banner by contacting your local VFW (at least you can around these parts).

I am in no way trying to insult your efforts. But, I must say that I think yellow ribbons are a sentimental civilian trend. Put up flags and stars instead?

Our county fair was held days after 9/11 and all our military recruiting tents and stands had yellow ribbons.

I am sorry to say that I was verbally abusive to the military personell manning the stations.

Get on your local talk radio and suggest this to the listening audience in your area. I've emailed my talk host. He's not said a word yet. There is a Navy base BUPERS (pencil pushers) about 20 miles North of Memphis.

Don't forget your car antenna or a small one for your dress/shirts. You can use a small US flag to hold it in place getting the best of both symbolism.
