Living in L.A. I come across more than my fair share of these folks. And the one thing they have in common is anger, deep anger due to dissatisfaction with themselves. They don't want to save the world, they want to smash it.
A better analogy would be after the aliens had zapped a few cities and they still kept on dancing...
