To: Hemingway's Ghost
We're a Prohibitionist-minded nation. Must be the Puritan heritage. (Frankly, I think most of our neuroses can be traced back to pre-colonial men who were uptight about not being able to satisfy their women, if you know what I mean).

Actually, the "uptight-Puritan" thing is a complete myth. The Puritans enjoyed a good time and the staid and reserved Continentals were glad to be rid of them.

The Puritans accumulated a lot of wealth in the old countries and built some of the largest and most well-stocked wine cellars in Europe, which the Crown was more than happy to take for itself once the Puritans had set sail.

Puritans believed that life was to be lived and enjoyed to the fullest. This was in direct contrast to many of their contemporaries.

I'd buy that only if each and every American was a descendant of John Winthrop and his ilk.
