Italy school trip was weedy good

ROME (Reuters) - An Italian court has ruled that taking 40 joints of hashish on a school trip is not a crime. The marijuana was for personal use since the 17-year-old student planned to share it with two fellow students and a teacher, the appeals court judge said.

Under Italian law, selling marijuana is a crime, but possession for personal use is not.

"It could easily have been consumed during the many days of the trip," Corriere della Sera daily quoted the court ruling as saying.

Seriously, though, Western European nations, with the exception of France and Sweden, don't share the U.S.'s obsession with marijuana. Cultural differences, indeed.

Let me predict how this thread will go... The anti-WOD crowd will post a few self-congratulatory notes and then migrate to the next WOD ping which appears like the Bat Signal in their "My Comments" list.

Wow! You must be psychic!

The same could be said about the US's obsession with stamping out "vice" in all forms. In Amsterdam, adverts for escort services are posted on lamp posts and no one cares about them at all. In the US, this would cause a great gnashing of teeth the likes of which was never before seen.

We're a Prohibitionist-minded nation. Must be the Puritan heritage. (Frankly, I think most of our neuroses can be traced back to pre-colonial men who were uptight about not being able to satisfy their women, if you know what I mean).

Thank you for the correction.

Much better ratio.

That would come out to be 10 joints a piece.

Not bad for a field trip. Emphasis on TRIP.

Actually, the "uptight-Puritan" thing is a complete myth. The Puritans enjoyed a good time and the staid and reserved Continentals were glad to be rid of them.

The Puritans accumulated a lot of wealth in the old countries and built some of the largest and most well-stocked wine cellars in Europe, which the Crown was more than happy to take for itself once the Puritans had set sail.

Puritans believed that life was to be lived and enjoyed to the fullest. This was in direct contrast to many of their contemporaries.

I'd buy that only if each and every American was a descendant of John Winthrop and his ilk.

Then a doper will post how pot has no harmful effects whatsoever.

Provide evidence that anyone has ever posted that pot has no harmful effects whatsoever.

Close. You've come very close to capturing the essence of what Skooz was getting at. But actually the typical format for WoD threads is usually something like this:

To: Doper

Pot has no harmful effects whatsoever

Cite?

"They will shout down everyone who disagrees with them."

Pretty hard to do when evryone just types on a keyboard.

You must be timid indeed if you feel 'shouted down'.

I agree with your main point, however; that few come here to clarify their own thinking, but rather to stand up for what they believe to be justice.

Hey, sometimes these threads are very illuminating!

And even more often, amusing. ;^)

I have never felt "shouted down." On the contrary, these threads are amusing. And they always, ALWAYS go the same way, regardless of the content of the story at the top. Someone could post a story with the title "Grandma Makes Excellent Stew in Her Old Pot," and the thread would soon be overrun with WOD posts.

I love this place.

"Grandma Makes Excellent Stew in Her Old Pot,"

See this is why the WOD is not working....

Even Grandma is smoking pot.

Yeah, and the drug warriors want to kick down her door and take granny away just like in the Prohibition.

You forgot to include the thread evolution prediction that was your own post. Predictions have already happened before ... so there is no excuse. But don't worry, there will be many more such threads in the future.

Outrageous!

When Granny does bong hits and fishbowls the kitchen before she bakes her cookies, who is she harming?

Damn drug warriors!!

40 joints for two students and a teacher

That's clearly not enough for a teacher whose incessant migraine headaches and ingrown toenail problems demand a medical relief that only the weed can bring.

</sarcasm off>

Hugh will probably see alot of pot heads changing their Florida vacation plans and opting for Italy. This will be a series event for the Italian tourist industry.
