Charlton Heston Speaks Out On Clooney's Cruel Alzheimer's Joke

Gallant Alzheimer's victim Charlton Heston is refusing to react in anger to George Clooney's joke about is tragic medical condition.

"I don't know the man - never met him, never even spoken to him," the 78-year-old silver screen legend told The ENQUIRER in an exclusive interview. "But I feel sorry for George Clooney - one day he may get Alzheimer's disease.

"I served my country in World War II. I survived that - I guess I can survive some bad words from this fellow."

Clooney ignited a firestorm of fury while accepting a Special Filmmaking Achievement Award from the National Board of Review in New Tork by telling the audience: "Charlton Heston announced again today that he is suffering from Alzheimer's."

And despite the hurt he caused, former "ER" star was unrepentant.

"I don't care," he said defiantly. "Charlton Heston is head of the National Rifle Assiciation - he deserves whatever anyone says about him."

Heston has often been the focus of controversy over his leadership of the NRA, but he was universally praised for his courage last August when he went public with the admission that he was suffering from the incurable - and fatal - disease that has also stricken former actor and President Ronald Reagan.

"I've still got a busy life going," Heston said. "I have no problem remembering things or being aware of things at all."

But if Heston was inclined to forgive Clooney's callous mockery, many others were not so forgiving.

"We've been inundated with e-mails from people across the country expressing outrage," Elizabeth Wilson, of the Alzheimer's Association, told The ENQUIRER.

"It was a totally insensitive joke at the expense of a man who had the courage to come forward, reveal that he had been disgnosed with this tragic disease - and by doing so gave hope to others that attention would be focused on it and perhaps hasten a cure

"It was particularly hurtful to the four million Americans who suffer from Alzheimer's and the 18 million more who love and care for them."

"Add another name to the list of actors I don't want to see in anything anymore."

I agree with you completely. The problem is that the list is growing so long that I may have to give up watching movies and TV altogether.

"...but Charleton Heston is the President of the NRA..."

You're right, of course, and I suppose that he and not LaPierre could therefore be referred to as "heading" the NRA. To me, he's more of a spokesman, much like Ulysses Grant was when he was president of the NRA.

Clooneys' father was a local T.V. personality in Cincinnati, and later wrote a column in the CINCINNATI POST. He was constantly writing about how GREAT a President bildo Clintoon was! In fact he wrote a few years ago that Clintoon was THE GREATEST PRESIDENT OF ALL TIMES! So maybe that's where Georgie boy got his goony political views from!

"May want to add Ronald Reagan to that list."

Done! And let's add Perry Como and Winston Churchill while we're at it.

"Well, Libertarians have one or two good points. :-)"

Unfortunately, one of them always happens to be at the top of their heads.

"I never was that impressed with Heston as an actor either, and then I saw him in Treasure Island. I remember being so impressed with his performance - I highly recommend that version of the movie - it had Irish music for a soundtrack, Christoper Lee as Blind Pew, Oliver Reed as Capt Bones and Heston played Long John. I never liked any of the other versions after seeing that one."

What about "Muppet Treasure Island"?

George Cloony: living proof (along with most of the rest of the celebrities in Hollywood) that "ignorance is bliss"!

Hell, in his profession ignorance, stupidity, thoughtlessness, cruelty, and slander are almost requirements to success.

I think she already has...To the point she was already OUT when Alec came IN.

HE's the new "foot in his mouth liberal" bannished to HS Star status, officially bumping her off to the trash heap of forgotten stars with Gary Coleman, Jerry Mathers, and nearly everyone who ever booked a cruise on the Love Boat to Fantasy Island!

"Yeah, me too, ain't it funny how once the ugly leftist words are spit out.....the entire package fades into one of revulsion? "

Exactly!!

"...liberal men just aren't masculine. "

Very true. I think it's their lack of principles that robs them of their masculinity. If you think about it, these liberal types really have NO beliefs whatsoever. They go with the flow just to be part of the crowd, much the same way a teenager does. There's nothing attractive about that, regardless of how "pretty" the face or how cute the tush.

Compary Clooney and his ilk to men such as Gerald McRaney, Tom Sellick and Mel Gibson. The former are nothing but whiney little boys who lead shallow, out-of-control lives. How any woman could find these "men" attractive is beyond me.

that robs them of their masculinity

Clooney can't be compared with Selleck or Gibson ---maybe Rock Hudson but Rock Hudson was at least more masculine.

Why don't you exercise your right to speak and answer the questions I asked in #139? You have been asked the same basic question in at least one other post yet you have completely ignored it. It is hard to understand someone who makes slanderous statements about a man with a sterling reputation and then refuses to back it up with some facts or sources.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't hear the speech or read it. FWIW I would be far more concerned with what he said than who listened to it or what vendors were selling there.
