Christopher Hitchens: I'm voting for Bush
Washington Post ^ | February 4, 2003 | Lloyd Grove

Posted on 02/03/2003 10:22:58 PM PST by Warhead W-88

Key quote: "I don't believe in [Edwards]," Hitchens tells Doublethink interviewer Tom Ivancie. "I mean, I told him I wouldn't vote for him. . . . Because I'd vote for Bush. The important thing is this: Is a candidate completely serious about prosecuting the war on theocratic terrorism to the fullest extent? Only Bush is."

Again, not that Bush is the be-all and end-all (I'm personally begining to gently gag on his freewheeling spending myself), but those who knock Bush should always remember that the man is attracting new voters to the conservative cause.

If the election turns on the votes of Dennis Miller and Christopher Hitchens -- and really, shouldn't it? -- then we're in like Flynn.

I didn't read the full article in the Post, but I did read Hitchen's puff peice about Atticus Edwards ( gum chewing ambulance chaser) in Vanity Fair, and thought maybe the real Hitchens got Arkansided, and was replaced by a drone.

When people move from the left to the right, they have to do it in baby-steps. Sometimes they try to find a temporary haven in ill-defined refuges such as "libertarianism." Sometimes they clutch on to a not-quite-completely-liberal candidate as a step over to the right. I did the latter myself, a long time ago, in 1988, when I supported as Democratic presidential candidate a self-professed "flaming moderate" and hawk named... Al Gore.

But eventually you toss such idiotic half-measures aside and finally... yes... how sweet it is... you finally embrace the Dark Side.

I think that's what Dennis Miller and Chris Hitchens are both going though. Seems to me that Hitchens has just had his meeting with the Emperor.

"...those who knock Bush should always remember that the man is attracting new voters to the conservative cause."

Quite true. But don't delude yourself into believing that Hitchens is becoming conservative.

Instead, Hitchens remains a socialist. But one who has the intelligence to recognize that which is of controlling importance. For which, he should be duly congratulated.

Among leftists, Hitchens is -- quite literally -- one-in-a-million.

His will is weakening, and he feels the potent embrace of the Dark Side.

Seriously, he will continue claiming to be a socialist, as he continues to drift further and further to the hard right. In two years, you will not be able to tell him and David Horowitz apart, except that Hitch will be drunk.

I've seen it happen.

Oh, but there's hope for him yet. His brother Peter was once a marxist too, back in his youth, but he's been on the 'dark side' now for years.

Christopher may yet join him. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Meanwhile, Hitchens suggests that old nemesis Bill Clinton was a CIA plant at Oxford, where both were students in the late 1960s. "I think he was a double," Hitchens says. "Somebody was giving information to [the CIA] about the anti-war draft resisters, and I think it was probably him. We had a girlfriend in common -- I didn't know then -- who's since become a very famous radical lesbian."

If you didn' read it, take a minute and do so.

You will be pleasantly surprised.

The great divide between Hitch and his brother Peter concerns two questions: faith and the Monarchy. Hitch is, unfortunately, a resolute atheist, while Peter is a practicing Catholic. Hitch remains a stalwart republican and believes that the Monarchy should be abolished. Peter Hitchens understands the value of tradition and continuity.

At least both agree on one important thing-both are resolutely pro-war and anti-Jihadist.

Be Seeing You,

Chris

Before the SOTU speech, Gallup found that a minority viewed Bush's policies as leading the nation in the right direction. Afterward, a majority said they were leading us in the right direction. This is a more useful measure than simple right track-wrong track direction of the country polls. As long as a majority of the people believe Bush's policies are taking the country in the right direction, he'll be re-elected without question.

According to the PBS folks who are whining due to his proposed budget cuts, EVERY area in non-defense spending is cut in his budget. That is hardly radical spending.
