When Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., called recently for the return of a military draft, he evoked images of inequality raised during the early years of the Vietnam War, when black soldiers died at rates much greater than their share of the U.S. population.

not. Blacks accounted for 12.5% of the causilities in Vietnam when they represented 11% of the young male population.

I recall from "Blackhawk Down," (the book) that the author said there were only a couple blacks among the 100+ Rangers in the unit in Mogadishu. That's where I first realized this trend, then my son joined and confirmed it.

Senior Air Force officials say they are troubled by the number of black pilots and plan to do better.

Senior Air Force officials? Why doesn't this read "Black leaders, including Jesse Jackson, Charles Rangel and Cynthia McKinney, expressed deep embarassment that blacks have failed so miserably in qualifying themselves to serve as pilots in America's fighting air force. They expressed determination to do more to encourage black youth to the self discipline required in order to become competitive for these honored jobs".

The writer notes the existence of a popular belief (...since the early days of the Vietnam war...) that blacks were killed/wounded at disproportionately high rates. However, the author does not note that this "popular belief" was dead wrong, as so amply proven by the book Stolen Valor. This was just one of many lies spread about by domestic communists in an effort to link up the civil rights movement with the anti-war movement.....

This can't possibly be true.

A couple of years ago I was watching an episode of JAG and they were portraying a bunch of Navy Seals on a mission in Lebanon. After watching for about 15 minutes I noticed that just about every one of them was Black.

They would not portray that wrong would they?

It also helps when people use the true headline and dont change it to spice it up.

I think the ability to do a search based on "author" would be a big help in the case of title changes.

I get an uneasy feeling that liberals tend to think that white soldiers are more expendable than other soldiers.

But how can this be -- Rangel said all the blacks were on the front lines!

"Bringing racism into it is just another ploy to discredit our armed services."

I totally and completely agree.

But, if you recall, racism has been brought into the factor numerous times over the past fifteen years or so by enemies of the U.S. during times of armed conflict.

For example, as recent as 1991, Saddam Hussein called upon all the Blacks in America to "rise up" against their repressors.

It's a good thing to keep a pulse on these types of things, as they are factors watched even by those outside of the U.S.
