Saddam may be on his way to an African exile

January 17 2003 at 05:32AM

Dubai - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has agreed to leave Iraq and go into exile in an African country if certain conditions are met, three diplomats in the United Arab Emirates were quoted as saying on Thursday.

The diplomats in Dubai - one Western and two Arab - who did not want to be named or reveal their sources, said the Iraqi leader was prepared to accept a deal under which he would leave the country if it was guaranteed that he would not to be prosecuted or persecuted by the United States or any of its European allies.

He would be accompanied by other members of his government and their families, and an African country would be considered for their exile, they said.

According to observers in the region, news of a possible exile for Hussein could be related to recent announcements that Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Syria were to present a proposal to avoid a new Gulf war in the next few days.

'The timing was not appropriate' The speculations gained pace after Syrian President Bashar al-Assad cancelled a scheduled trip to Teheran on Wednesday and a visit of General Ali Hassan al-Majid to Cairo was postponed.

Egyptian media had first announced that al-Majid, a member of Iraq's Revolutionary Council and a cousin of Hussein, wanted to bring Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak a message from Hussein.

"The timing was not appropriate," Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Maher said in Cairo on Thursday.

The three diplomats said further terms for Hussein's departure would be the withdrawal of US troops from the Gulf, the end of United Nations arms inspections and sanctions against Iraq and measures against the production of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

But the US had so far rejected these conditions and Egypt was now trying to persuade Baghdad to accept a compromise, the diplomats said. - Sapa-DPA

I'd actually like to see him go into exile, not to avoid a war but because it would piss off the lefties so much. They've been chanting for months that Bush is trying to avoid a peaceful solution and is forcing war, if we actually got a peaceful solution that wasn't appeasement that would be tons of face egg.

At least they threw in some humor.

I hear the weather is nice in Somalia, the help is cheap. Better not turn your back on them though.

i noticed that as well. but the line about the compromise eased my concerns a little: i suspect he'll settle for "and we won't kill you."

How 'bout a roll in the hay, too, while we're at it? They can't be serious... I think it was meant to be insulting.

"the end of United Nations arms inspections and sanctions against Iraq and measures against the production of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq."

So if Saddam leaves, then Iraq gets to create more WMD.

This should be a "Political Humor" thread.

He might as well have added "And Prez-ee-dent Boosh must learn to love Broccoli."

somehow, zimbabwe comes to mind. get some nice british expatriate farmer to turn over his farm to saddam. it would not, after all, be our fault if zanu-pf "war veterans" show up the next day and run him off.

Yep. I've been saying for a while that I thought all the saber-rattling was as much to help cause a peaceful (or near-peaceful) turnover of government as it was to ready ourselves for a war. I will not be at all surprised to see either a coup or a voluntary exile. And boy will that put the anti-war folk's knickers in a knot. But never fear, Korea will give them something new to carry on about.

Ok, so the IDF can still go in and blow his head off, sounds good.

I would like to read the fine print of any agreement to let him go into exile. He is suppose to have many doubles so you have have proof it was him. this smells like it is bogus to me.

I agree with you -- no conditions or negotiations. I personally want him taken out and not free to encourage further activity of terrorists. Cannot believe anyone would want him in exile to cause more trouble.

The Arabs are the first to realize that Dubya is absolutely serious, and that Dubya has already burned the bridge.

Dubya sent the full force needed, and then some. To back down now would go down in history as the most wussed out action in the history of America. It can't and won't happen. I can hear Dubya saying to Rummy, "Burn the damn bridge." I love my President!!!

So there are two choices: The easy way, or the hard way. Either way, Saddam is gone.

The Arabs realized this, while the UN ponders its navel.

Personally, I think the hard way is a lot cleaner, and will lead to the overthrow of Iran from the stinky Mulahs, by people who read the internet, and listen to rock and roll.

Saudi is scared, of course, because they bribe their Mullahs and have a country named after them--a family. They allow the Mullahs to preach fundamentalist Islam BS, which the country bought, to preserve their position of incredible wealth. They would hate to have any revolution happen in the ME, cuz (unlike Iran) the Mullahs in Saudi rule the roost.

Let's do it the hard way, and get it over with.

The easy way is for Saddam to go into exile. That never works; they always come back. And then the administration that let it happen gets trashed.

Saddam's face has been thoroughly electronically mapped. There will be no mistake.
