Actually, this was just before Mohammed began his prophecies. The Persians at that time were mostly Zorastrians, I think. They warred back and forth with the Byzantines for a few centuries before Muslim armies swept both aside in the late 600's

As much as I'd like to we can't blame this one on the Moslems. The Persians wouldn't be subjegated by Islam for another 30 or 40 years.
