Bold 'World War' rhetoric from North Korea

AP Photo/KCNA North Koreans rally in Pyongyang on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003. Standing in rows on a snow-covered plaza, tens of thousands of North Koreans rallied Tuesday calling for a stronger military, as the communist state warned U.S. economic sanctions against it would lead to war.

SEOUL, South Korea (January 10, 2003 7:35 a.m. EST) - North Korea warned the United States on Friday that a "new Korean War will finally lead to the Third World War" and dared the Americans to engage it in a "fire-to-fire standoff."

The inflammatory comments, not uncommon for state-sponsored North Korean media, came from newspaper article carried by the North's official news agency, KCNA.

Just hours earlier, North Korea announced that it was withdrawing from the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty amid an intensifying standoff with the United States over the North's nuclear programs.

The Northern newspaper article urged North Koreans to be on heightened "vigilance against the reckless military and political moves of the U.S. warmongers."

It said U.S. efforts to have North Korea abandon its nuclear ambitions amounted to a "strategy for domination" and said "let us see who will win and who will be defeated in the fire-to-fire standoff."

North Korea added that "a new Korean War will finally lead to the Third World War. If a war breaks out on the Korean peninsula where military and strategic interests of neighboring big countries are entangled, they will be embroiled in it, like it or not."

Sounds like North Korea has just appointed China as a volunteer in its war.

I think that they are coming to the brink of his limits and soon after Iraq is dealt with I feel that North Korea is next on the list. Just my feeling on the issue but I feel that it's coming. One thing about it, i'm not so sure that the North Koreans aren't right about WW III being real close. As a matter of fact i'm not sure we're not already engaged in it.

Right- Think of Albania,Romania and other stalinist countries (include Cuba) -leaders for life, starve and kill
their own citizens to remain in power....but North Korea
is a little different, kidnap Japanese citizens! dig tunnels
through solid rock to have invasion "highways ready" !
develop nuclear weapons and share that with every known
crackpot leader in world- I think catastrophic regional
wars WILL happen.Iraq,Iran,North Korea,libya,India/Pakistan,
Yeah Carter and Klintoon really showed how to lead the world. And the U.S. will lose some good men because of these fools/traitors.

Only thing new is now they have nuclear weapons, are developing long range missile capabilities and are making us look like we can be easily pushed around and blackmailed. I do not want to see war but we can not let this stand.

China provides 25 per cent of NK foodstuffs. All they have to do is withhold it and NK would be done. Nothing NK does is not without consultation and permission from China.

This is a continuation of the trash-talk the USA continues to hear. This is dangerous...the longers it goes on, the more America is perceived to be weak. The problem compounds as other wanna be's join the growing chorus of rebellion. That's correct....REBELLION.

This is why America will have to be "heavy handed" in punishing a little kingdom or two. An American demostration of power and dominance is needed. If US superiority can't successfully project itself over the next few years...we are all in serious trouble...sooner than later.
