Texan arrested in Turlock (CA) in sting for Web pedophiles

TURLOCK -- Jerry Dock McClain drove 1,500 miles from Texas to Turlock with plans to rendezvous with a 13-year-old girl he met on the Internet and whisk her away to Mexico, police say.

Instead, the 65-year-old retired Navy veteran was whisked away -- to jail -- after his arrest by detectives with the Sacramento Valley Hi-Tech Crimes Task Force.

McClain's arrest was the 30th that Detective Ken Hedrick has made in the past 30 months -- a string that drew the attention of ABC Television's "Good Morning America." The show plans to profile the latest case Friday.

The investigation began in April when McClain met who he thought was a 13-year-old girl in an Internet chat room.

Only later would he learn that the teen-ager was Hedrick, who was playing the role of a 13-year-old as part of an electronic sting targeting pedophiles.

Over the months, Hedrick and McClain chatted regularly, detectives said. At one point, the two talked on the telephone.

"Hedrick uses a voice synthesizer that changes his voice to that of a young girl," said Sgt. Adam Christianson, Hedrick's supervisor on the task force. "We use it because often perpetrators want to talk to the victim to validate that they actually are talking to a young girl."

The two also exchanged items through the mail. McClain asked for some girl's underwear, and Hedrick sent him some, Christianson said.

McClain later e-mailed and told Hedrick he had framed and hung the underwear on his wall. And when police in Kerrville

Texas, searched McClain's home, that is exactly what they found.

Man allegedly meant to take teen to Mexico

The e-mail liaison stretched into October, when McClain unveiled a plan to come get the teen-ager, take her to Texas and then to Mexico, Stanislaus County sheriff's deputy Tom Letras said.

"He went so far as to tell the girl to get rid of all pictures of herself in the house so they couldn't issue an Amber alert, and said, 'We'll cut your hair and make you look like a boy,'" Letras said.

"The plan was they were going to meet at a motel in Turlock and have sex after school. Then after Thanksgiving she was going to run off with him."

McClain scratched the November rendezvous because of car trouble, Letras said. They rescheduled for Dec. 19, and he made the 1,500-mile trip from Kerrville.

"He showed up 24 hours early and drove by her junior high and the Burger King where they were to meet," Christianson said. "We had him under surveillance the whole time."

McClain had said he would be in the Burger King and would leave the doors to his car unlocked, Letras said. The girl was to get in his car and duck behind the seat. He would then come out and they would drive away.

Instead, McClain stayed parked across the street waiting for the girl, Christianson said.

"We have a female deputy who is very young-looking and small, who we dressed in the clothes he requested -- backpack, baseball cap and coveralls," Christianson said.

"She went into the Burger King and he pulled up from across the street, flashing his lights to get her attention, and into the Burger King parking lot. The moment he walked into the restaurant, we arrested him."

No doubt. This guy is 65 years old. I seriously doubt that he suddenly decided to do this at the age of 64 1/2. I hope the evidence on his computer puts him in federal prison with a 400 lb cellmate named Bubba who's in the market for a new prison wife.

Keep this Texan. We don't want him back.

I am still a little uneasy with federal officals lying about who they are.

Havent these people realized that all 14 or 13 year old girls on the internet are FBI agents.

No question the old pervert needs to be w/ Bubba. How many resources did the police use to bust this guy? What could they have spent their resources on that would have benefited
you and I? Could any of this be construed as entrapment?

"Most people think of pedophiles as these creepy guys who you can identify," Christianson said. "But the truth is over the years we've arrested professional football players, doctors, teachers and even journalists."

What! Even journalists?!? I simply can't believe it.

Just don’t solicit children for sex. No problem.

I'm uneasy about it, too.

But I can live with it depending on the specifics of how the contacts are handled. I can see it very easily turning from a sting into active entrapment.

One good point is that presumably all contacts are precisely documented.

Well, from my perspective this does benefit "I." I don't need perverts like this guy stalking around after my daughter. When you're getting rid of predators you hunt them down -- if you wait until they attack, it's too late.

As long as the pedophile is the one who does the initial contact and seeks out a teen girl to talk too, then fine. But I would not be surprised if there are FBI agents sitting in chat rooms typing "13 year old girl looking for older man to chat with" to see who bites their hook.

That is about as intelligent as those who say "Well, if your not doing anything wrong, then you would have nothing to worry about" when discussing civil rights violations and rampant ignoring of the 4th amendment by the Imperial Federal Government.

Hey, if your not harboring any illegal substances or items then surely you wouldnt mind recinding the 4th amendment. Nor the 5th should you be asked to testify. Hey, if you didnt do anything wrong, no problem.

I have no problem with that. Any man that would want to hook up with a young person like that is a criminal.

But they don't need to do that. These pervs seeks out young girls. You don't have to pursue them. Go to a boy band chat room and count the people in it. Probably 1/4 are trolling men.

I guess there is a fundemental difference between us. I prefer a government that doesnt lie to entrap its citizens. Where as you find that perfectly acceptable.

Two of the biggest smuggling items currently into America from Canada and Mexico are the old 3 gallon toliets and the old CFC containing stuff used in refrigirators and air conditioning. Say you called in a plubmer or AC specialist to fix a problem at your home. Turns out the problem is very expensive to fix, but for half the price he can install one of the above items and your problem is fixed. You take the deal. Next he handcuffs you and your off to jail for attempting to purchase an illegal item.

Hey, no problem. You deserved it. And never mind that the federal agent lured you into the crime.

I know it is vastly different than the topic at hand, but the basis, a lying government agent with the sole purpose of entraping someone is the same.

I guess the part that bugs me is that there are no children actually involved. The "crime" takes place exclusively in the mind of the pervert. He solicited no child, but rather a cop posing as a child.

If a young-looking adult woman claiming to be 15 had sex with an older man, would he be committing statutory rape? He certainly would be intending to, but would it, or should it, qualify as a crime?

What about a young-looking detective who purchases liquor without being carded? The clerk probably believed he was selling liquor to a minor, but he wasn't.

There is a disquieting element of "thought crime" in these situations.
