The photos of the sniper suspects continue to be splattered on news pages and in newscasts around the world. What Trent Lott said and what he meant continue to spin the news, spurring headlines about how wide an umbrella the Republican Party wields and whether the party of Lincoln holds an umbrella at all. Black Entertainment Television and its founder, Bob Johnson, continue to get grief for pulling the plug on that network's news programming. While each of those controversies are certainly worthy of running commentaries, there is a more profound problem that momentarily grabs attention: black-on-black violence.

When did we lose our way?
Why do we prefer to shake our groove things instead of keeping up with current events and keeping our neighborhoods safe?
Why do we find more satisfaction in yakking about Trent Lott, who you wouldn't know if he were standing right next to you, than chatting up police about that gun-toting drug dealer who stands up the corner night and day?
Shouldn't we, as we did before integration, take better care of our own?

It takes fortitude to write this kind of column, especially if -- as it appears by her use of the first-person plural pronouns -- the author's a black American herself.

Or with current black leadership and alliance with the Democrat party? Or with a virtual absence of intellectual honesty and capacity for honest self-critism? Or with an ever diminishing attachment to reality?

Should Republicans pander to these unfortunate characteristics in a vain effort to win a pathetic share ot the vote or leave this surrealism to the democrats and let them be tainted by the mindlessness which pervades the intellectual life of the black "community?"

Republicans should recognize that other minorities will recognize that their interests must diverge from the dependency culture and Kafka-esq surrealism of black politics and will eventually be alligned with timeless conservative principles.

The condition of the inner cities has less to do with black culture and more to do with the "progressive" social programs conceived by government do-gooders decades ago to "help" black people. Black people can help themselves by supporting the following government-shrinking ideas:

- Get rid of the welfare state that impoverishes generations of poor by making them dependent on government checks

- Get rid of public school teacher's unions that maintain the status-quo of bad education to advance their political and financial agendas

- End the War on Drugs which turns city streets into war zones and LEOs into oppressors instead of protectors

When blacks (i.e. Americans of African descent, not "AfricanhyphenAmericans") demand these steps, tell the government to get out of their lives, and follow their own path to the American dream, they will truly realize the dream of Martin Luther King: they will be judged by the content of their character and NOT the color of their skin.

Unfortunately, easily refuted by any number of standard-issue-African-American Liberals. You see John, this regrettable behaviour within the African-American Community is the Legacy of Slavery and Racism, and not therefore, the fault of those African-Americans who are actually comitting what this poor deluded oreo-authoress refers to as "crimes."

For white people to attempt to end this wave of illegitimacy and violence would be unthinkable racism. For black people to try and end it by co-operating with the police, even if the police are black, would show an alarming lack of solidarity with the oppressed. Therefore that is also unacceptable.

So John, as night follows day, we must logically conclude that America is stuck with this gruesome prospect of horrible crime and violence within the African-American Community forever. Thank God Sir, for the Democrat Party, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, The Clintons, Senator Byrd, et al.. It was only by studying their work that I was able to make this clear to you.

The fact is that the black community could have seen what was happening to them years ago and taken steps to right the situation. They didn't. Instead a new black culture,
of victimization and handouts, emerged that we see today. Personally, I don't think there's any going back for them now since over 90% of them support them same liberals that keep worsening their situation.

For some strange reason Republicans seems to have a masochistic tendency to pander to a portion of the public that obviously wants nothing to do with them.

90% of blacks vote for liberals that abuse them and take them for granted. Blacks seem to like that treatment or else they'd change their voting habits. So the black community seems to have a masochistic streak as well.

All of this may make good theater, but it does nothing to help either of the masochistic parties involved.

Republicans should move on and either let the black community catch up to the real world, or let them stay where they are. There are other minorities that need no pandering and can see for themselves what harm liberals do.

some of us have been well aware of this problem for years, though up until now the mainstream liberal press has turned a deliberately blinded eye on it. So, somebody finally named the unmentionable elephant in the public arena. good. better late than never, I suppose.

Good column, though not news to many of us working within the Black community to change things. Ms. Simmons was on BET's recently canceled "Lead Story" herself sometimes, so she knows this firsthand.
