IIRC, gold hit nearly $800 per ounce in 1979 ... a year before Reagan took office ... this was in response to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, among other things ... probably the 1979 Iranian Revolution being another factor ... I was selling gold at the time and had some Iranian students as customers (they opposed the Ayatollah's policies / diatribe) ...
