Trent Lott's celebrated gaffe was probably nothing that any decent, fair-minded person should have gotten all steamed up about -- especially considering the occasion -- but the naked political opportunism and innate VICIOUSNESS of our foul-minded liberal opposition almost miraculously gave our party the best possible chance to rid itself of an embarrassingly incompetent, unprincipled and ineffectual leader who was never fit for his high ranking position in the first place. Don't forget the VICIOUSNESS of the "canonized conservatives," who abandoned Lott. And George W. Bush, who jumped on Lott and all but labelled him a racist, but praised him today, as a "good man."
While you blast Lott as "unprincipled and ineffectual," remember this: he was elected, unanimously by his fellow GOP Senators.
When we wash the hypocrisy off, we can move on.

And George W. Bush, who jumped on Lott and all but labelled him a racist..
Dubya about had to come down hard on Lott in public.
Lott wasn't saying much, the whole incident and what he meant exactly was ambiguous. Everyone was uncertain and it was only a matter of time before someone put Dubya on the spot about it anyway.
I get the impression he came down hard on him in private also, and that's kind of troubling. (At the urging of Rove, perhaps?)
I think you're right about the cowardly, "Canonized Conservatives" though.
I couldn't believe my eyes when the nicest, most compassionate, understanding & all around most decent comment I heard about his mistake was from Tom Daschle.
I didn't care why Daschle said what he did, I was just amazed that he said it while the supposed "conservatives" were all readying Lott's noose.

Yes, he was elected unanimously, but on another thread there was information that Lott manipulated the rules so as to preclude anyone from challenging him for SML.

Lott DID do the right thing, and it SHOULD stop in this neighborhood, and it should stop now. The issue is now closed, except for those that want to fight old wars that have been decided, rather than new ones, that haven't.

Well, sinkspur, there is one silver lining for you in all this - no one here will ever call you a Bushbot again.
I'm probably not the first to say this, but I haven't seen it yet. ;-)
