I think the Majority Leader was referring to Strom hiring blacks in the Sentate before anyone else when he said' We would have been better off [in the 1960's race situations] with a leader like StromBut he said Strom should have been elected, in 1948. He was running as a segragationist then, that was his big issue.

He probably didn't know the specifics of Strom's 1948 campaign and was just trying to say something complimentary to the ol' guy. Some staffer probably prepared him some generalized background notes on Strom without the specifics. Lott should have known, but remember, he is a doofus.

IF...I repeat...IF this is what he meant, why didn't he explain this? It certainly is an obscure reference to put in front of an audience.
