I'm rather amazed that with all the black vote/white vote conflict, New Orleans race relations seem good. I've been visiting for decades and NOLA is always a paragon of civility; the Blacks there are much more pleasant, less bombastic and angry than in West Coast cities, it seems to me.

The only time I visited NOLA (in 1997), I seemed to notice the same thing.
My guess is that since the general "vibe" of New Orleans is "let the good times roll",
it seems to be generally accepted, even across racial lines, that things just go better when
folks try to get along and enjoy themselves.
What NOLA (and Louisiana) lack in economic development, they more than make up for with
a good-times culture and good food.

Very true.I taught at one of the most notorious high schools in New Orleans in the Seventies.I almost never had a racially derogatory name thrown my way and my disciplinary problems were no more stressful than most of the black teachers experienced.

I'm rather amazed that with all the black vote/white vote conflict, New Orleans race relations seem good.I agree, however, I think this is true in most of the country now. Here in N.C. I was a poll observer at a 99.9% black precinct and was a little nervous, but got along very well with ALL of the poll workers including the black poll judge.
Maybe they will begin looking at the Republican Party if they can see that we're not the "enemy" and the Rats are just ignoring them after each election. We're going to have to win them over one by one and WHO KNOWS, we may be able to get 50% of the black vote in the next 50 to 100 years-LOL!
