That made a lot of sense at the time, and there were rumors of high velocity planes being tested in Nevada (where stealth technology was kept under wraps for several years). But it has been so long and I suspect a capability like this would be deployed and exposed before this time. Sadly, I suspect Clinton likely did un-fund the program if it existed. Likely now unmanned air vehicles (like Predator) will replace the SR-71. I would like to think we had something like Aurora but I am not so sure.

After leaving office, President Bush (41) acknowledged in a public interview that the U.S. had indeed developed a very highly-advanced aircraft prototype which shared some of the characteristics that have been incorrectly attributed to the legendary Aurora, which was, in fact, nothing more than one of several budget line items used to disguise secret funding for the B-2 bomber during its development in the early 1980s.
Bush also explained that his administration did not permit development of the highly-advanced aircraft to advance beyond the prototype stage because it would have been -far- too expensive to build in the numbers necessary to fulfill its mission requirements.
