It is often easier to write a long screed than a short one because you can just ramble on and on and likely cover the subject. A short version requires editing and organizing, which make it more understandable and easier to read.

I believe it was Ben Franklin who wrote to a friend and apologized for the letter being a long one, saying: "I didn't have enough time to write a shorter one".
