BERLIN (AP) - Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Friday said his family had received a series of threatening letters and accused the media of a campaign against him.
"The unmistakably threatening letters that we are receiving beat everything," Schroeder told ARD television. Schroeder, who lives with his wife and her daughter, gave no details of the threats.
The chancellor has been under sustained pressure from political opponents and media commentators over Germany's weak economy since his re-election Sept. 22.
Critics accuse Schroeder hiding the extent of Germany's problems ahead of the vote. His re-elected government has since announced plans to raise taxes to plug a yawning budget deficit.
Schroeder said he was in favor of tough scrutiny of politicians by the media. But he accused some newspapers, which he didn't name, of going too far.
"The open character assassination that we have in much of the tabloid press at the moment, and not just against me, damages Germany's democratic culture," Schroeder said, according to a transcript of the interview released ahead of its Friday night broadcast.
Irreverent criticism of Schroeder, whose popularity has plunged since his re-election, hasn't been restricted to the newspapers.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder on Friday said his family had received a series of threatening letters and accused the media of a campaign against him. Hysteria and delusions from Liberal-goingdownitis, it seems.
Schroeder caught it from Daschle, who got it from .....

Nah - he's one of those child actors trying to morph into a grownup career... (Actually, he may be a good guy - this pic came off of a PETA site, giving him a "thumbs down" because he actually hunts on his Colorado property)

...[Schroeder] gave no details...
Ah, the logical foundation of the Liberal argument.
Reveals the lie, the intent to decieve.
Trademark of the charlatan.

Rick Schroeder IS one of the good guys - a conservative Republican.
By the way, kudos to the freeper (I can't remember his name) who predicted exactly what would happen in Germany after the election. Germany hates America. They elected the anti American candidate. Nobody dares touch the entitlement system and unions there.
Unfortunatly for them, they are about to sink in the sewage with their love affair with socialism. We have talk radio to point this out, and Americans are now seeing the inevitable tie between entitlements, socialism, and economic destruction.
God bless Rush.

Friendly fire! Rick Schroeder is the host of "The New American Sportsman" and is a pretty conservative guy. No wonder they gave him a thumbs down.
To: nypokerface
Geez, he must be taking his talking points from Tom Daschle! It's always the media's fault!

That damn right-wing media, it's a conspiracy I tell you. The right-wing media conspired with the right-wing economics indicators to show the German economy is in a free fall. Everyone knows socialism is the only proven economic system that works.(sarcasm)
