It's no longer "supply and demand" for money or labor. If there isn't enough money the government prints more and can dish it out freely as it wishes, it's doing the same with labor by deciding there is an unlimited supply of cheap labor it can either import or send American jobs, American salaries can be easily controlled in this way.

America might have a middle class society but it wasn't handed to us on a silver platter by the English aristocrats. Capitalism as we knew it meant the average American also could obtain and control capital, an American could reap the profits from his own labor. When the elites destroy the middle class, America will be no different than any third world country.

...The decision comes nearly a year after Bush had said he wanted to allow Mexican trucks on U.S. roads, in compliance with a provision of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexican trucks and buses won't be on U.S. highways until the Department of Transportation can review applications from carriers. It must then grant qualifying carriers provisional operating authority...

Knowing the INS, you could name your fleet of trucks the "Al Qaeda Express" and get the rubber chicken stamp of approval.

America might have a middle class society but it wasn't handed to us on a silver platter by the English aristocrats. Capitalism as we knew it meant the average American also could obtain and control capital, an American could reap the profits from his own labor. When the elites destroy the middle class, America will be no different than any third world country.

One reason the middle class grew was the unions. They had the power to get a fair share of the profit for their employees in the form of wages, benefits, and decent work conditions. There was the expectation that if a worker hooked up with a good, stable private sector job or in the public sector, and did their job, the opportunity was there to make a decent living, and have a place to live and raise their family.

Back then, one worker could support a family. Things started deteriorating for the worker when two incomes in a family were an option that let people spend more but do less of their own chores, and then became a "necessity" for an inflated lifestyle.

Look at what we have now. Next to no secure jobs where one income can support a family, many working-class neighborhoods being either over-run or over-priced because of those cheaper laborers from other countries, no independent manufacturing capability as a nation, and an overblown federal government that has taken over huge chunks of our lives.

The Russians back in the cold war were kind of a good enemy. Khruschev stomping his shoe, breaks from school work to hide under our desks in case of an attack, and spy vs. spy in MAD magazine.

Then came Viet Nam when I was in college. HS classmates going off to a war that we didn't understand. Those pictures on TV that brought it home. Soldiers, many of them coming home as damaged goods, with stories too horrible to relate. Others came up on top, benefitting from this smaller world that we would control.

Look at us now. Many (most?) families are so far in debt they'll have to work until it kills them. People giving up individual decision making (or having it taken away) in education, medicine, privacy, secure jobs and environments.

I'm really passionate about this border-illegals-Mexican trucks (bizarre and nutty) situation. Some of us remember that things were better when our culture was watching Ozzie and Harriet and going to the Drive In and not counting the fat grams in our ice cream sundae and saving money all year for Christmas gifts and having the neighborhood moms there when we came home from school. We're never going to get any of that back if we don't stabilize the population and culture of this country and have decent jobs for all of those who are willing to work.

Those in power either don't get it or don't care. I can't decide which would be worse.

Muslim population in Mexico? There is a community in Chiapas among the Zapatistas who have been wooed by the Saudi's, and made their first pilgrimage to Mecca. Of the converts there are suppose to be .03% of the population here in Mexico, who adhere to Islamic faith.

Update. Bush blocks the trucks, and Mexico working on retaliation:

Transport Secretariat calls for ban on U.S. trucks in Mexico (NAFTA)

3 in 10,000, you mean? Or 3 in 100? 3%? Or .03%?

I can't picture Mexicans wanting to become Muslims. Not in any large number --maybe some prisoners just like here who get recruited to be Black Muslims who are attracted to the self-pity and violence in that religion.
