The last bit about the 'First they came for the...' is a corruption of the original text. The order is 'first they came for the communists', then 'socialists, trade unionists, then Jews' (this is what in fact did happen historically).

Black conservative ping

If you want on (or off) of my black conservative ping list, please let me know via FREEPmail. (And no, you don't have to be black to be on the list!)

Extra warning: this is a high-volume ping list.

Lawsuit claims McDonald's burgers and fries are making kids fat

NEW YORK (AP) --Are Big Macs hazardous to children's health?

Lawyers have filed a class-action lawsuit against McDonald's on behalf of New York children who have suffered health problems, including diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity.

In federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday, a lawyer alleged that the fast-food chain has created a national epidemic of obese children. Samuel Hirsch argued that the high fat, sugar and cholesterol content of McDonald's food is "a very insipid, toxic kind of thing" when ingested regularly by young kids.

The plaintiffs include a Bronx teen who ate every meal at McDonald's for three years while living in a homeless shelter. Another is a 13-year-old boy from Staten Island who says he ate at McDonald's food three to four times a week and is now 5-foot-4 and 278 pounds.

McDonald's lawyer Brad Lerman insisted the lawsuit was a frivolous attempt to cash in on the Golden Arches, "the kind of lawsuit that shouldn't be in court."

"People don't go to sleep thin and wake up obese," Lerman said. "The understanding and comprehension of what hamburgers and french fries do has been with us for a long, long time."

McDonald's has asked Judge Robert Sweet to dismiss the case, arguing those who filed the claims cannot show their health woes were caused by Big Macs and insisting the company has never misled customers about its food. The judge did not immediately rule on the request.

My kids are thin, I think I am going to sue the food industry for not putting enough calories in food.

We need reform immediately and....any loser in one of these pathetic lawsuits should be forced to pay all expenses involved plus penalties.

Excellent post!! I am an attorney (estates & trusts, prenuptial agreement, taxes, contracts - inoffensive things like that), and I have long contended that many in my profession are the greatest leeches in history. Like unions, ambulance chasers and class action lawyers do serve a purpose, but things have gone too far. Tort reform is absolutely critical, as are real and severe penalties (on both attorneys and plaintiffs) for bringing frivolous lawsuits. We finally have a shot at tort reform under Bush and a Republican Congress, but I'm not holding my breath. As to penalties on lawyers, this is mostly done by state bar associations that are chock full of (blood-sucking) lawyers, so don't hold your breath on this score either. Another possible solution is to make the losing plaintiff pay the winning defendant's legal bills. Do this and you'll see these suits diminish to a small fraction of their current number.

Everything in this country costs more due to the threat of lawsuits, and many good things that we grew up with are gone forever for the same reason. This is one lawyer who agrees with Shakespeare about first killing all the lawyers (well, mostly - let's confine it to 90% of the tort and class-action folks, and see if the lesson takes).

"They do it after dark?"

Thanks for posting this. It is always encouraging to know that there are others out there who understand what is happening to this country.

The Safety Nazis are stealing our freedom, and the Lawyers are stealing our prosperity. If they are allowed their way, America will become a 3rd world country, and Americans will become slaves to their gov't.

The class-action Tobacco Settlement is another infamous example. It was supposed to pay for health care for people injured by smoking.

Actually it was a bigger lie than that. The state suits were to "reimburse" taxpayers for the costs states incurred for smoking related illness.

Did anyone get a tax rebate from their state after the states and trial vultures split up the billions of cash? I didn't.

This is simply the inevitable spillover from the growth of a problem of which Thomas Jefferson warned us over 220 years ago.

After watching the early madness of the French Revolution first-hand, he returned here and told friends that if the socialism then ravaging Europe ever came to our shores, two things would happen:
1. We would soon become a highly contentious and litigious people as we shouldered one another out of the way to get "OURS" from the public trough and
2.the public trough would quickly become empty.

We have largely emptied the public trough, burst through its rotted bottom and tussle in the mud and slime beneath as we thrash about wildly in search of a PRIVATE trough to plunder.

And it may be too late to turn this thing around.

Pray for our grandchildren. We're leaving them a MESS far worse than that we inherited from OUR parents and grandparents.

the dream of 231 years

Measured from 1776, shouldn't that be 226 years?

Free money has an old and powerful appeal...

Indeed!

A family story tells of my uncle (later a Pearl Harbor survivor and now deceased) as a boy of 8 or 9.This was a gentler time when kids could roam and explore all day without the fear of being kidnapped, or worse. He came home to supper with a handful of Anarchist and Socialist literature. My grandmother asked where he got it.

It seems that he and his friend had seen a large banner proclaiming "Free Mooney", and the boys followed the crowd thinking that the sign read "Free Money". They waited all day, but no one gave them any money, just the political diatribes.

Mooney was an anarchist in the late 20s, I think. I'm not sure what he did, but I think he died in prison. This all happened in California's Central Valley.

The family teased my uncle about his mistake his whole life.

By bringing these class action suits ,such as the attempted extortion against McDonalds, in the inner city courts, lawyers know they can play the race card, and the rest of America pays up!

One more article about them. Depending on what you feel at the moment, they are the gov't, the Democrats, feminists, etc.

The problem is the mainstream America that has forgotten its roots. Somone can play the race card only if you are willing to play.

You know, giving away the ending to a movie is not the best way to start off an op-ed.
