Thanks for the ping Howlin. I just got home and was dying to find out what happened. WOW, after waiting all day all this happens in a matter of hours.

Cloture? In the Senate, debate is held until a vote of 60 Senators can be achieved to end debate. The close of debate is called cloture. Only then can a vote be taken.

When a vote is close, and less than 60 agree to end debate, it was desired that debate would continue until one side could win enough converts to gain 60 votes.

On the flip side, a party can filibuster (debate endlessly) a bill they cannot defeat, but the other side doesn't have 60 votes to stop them. That forces them to compromise

I enjoyed it, too! Now Cleland is rattling on and on...loves Powell, questions the President...same old, same old. Can't wait for Saxby!

I wonder if Cleland appreciates the irony. He was beaten, in large part, because of his opposition to the Homeland Security bill favored by the President; in the end he voted for it.

Looks like all the Republicans, plus a few Dems, notably including Hollings of Shedd's and Thurmond's state, voted to confirm Shedd.

Landrieu voted against Shedd. Can she be made to pay for that?

Couldn't help but notice that our senators cancelled each other's vote on this judicial nominee. Gee, which of the two senators, do you suppose, is up for re-election sooner?
