New Jersey Assembly Passes Landmark Childproof Handgun Bill <Hold Muh Bullets, Alert!)
Associated Press - breaking on the wire | November 18, 2002

WASHINGTON, Nov. 18 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence united with the Million Mom March hailed today's passage in the New Jersey State Assembly of A. 700, the Childproof Handgun Bill. The measure would require all handguns sold in the state to be designed with safety features to prevent children and unauthorized users from injuring themselves or others. The bill now moves back to the Senate where a similar version of the bill passed overwhelmingly in October. Once the Senate votes for concurrence, the bill will go to Governor McGreevy who has stated that he will sign the bill into law.

``The State Assembly's action today puts New Jersey at the forefront of the gun safety movement `` said Michael D. Barnes, President of the Brady Campaign. ``This bill will have a profound impact on the safety of our children for generations to come. We urge other states and Congress to follow the sensible step New Jersey is taking to protect kids by childproofing handguns.''

The legislation would require all handguns sold in New Jersey to be childproofed within three years of the state Attorney General determining that childproof handguns are available for the consumer market. ``It is time for gun manufacturers change their ways,'' said Carole Stiller, State Council President of the Million Mom March of New Jersey. ``Safety measures on handguns can no longer be an afterthought. Too many lives have been ended by senseless acts that could have been averted with simple safety devices. The Million Mom March thanks the Assembly for today's vote on this common-sense legislation that is long overdue.''

Anyone know if this bill exempts police from these 'safety' features?

With luck, the state police will be allowed to keep their night sticks. (/sarcasm)

Well, since that may never happen, it may not be that big of a deal.

This is completely unconstitutional. And unworkable.

Congratulations, New Jersey! Now you will save approximately 1 child's life and kill several hundred adults!

I recall this question coming up earlier and the answer was law-enforcement is excluded.

If NJ proceeds with this, in effect there will be no gun dealers in the state. I do not see major firearms manufacturers producing weapons that meet this requirement. Just my opinion.

Question for the Million Moron Moms: How can this legislation be "long overdue" if the technology needed to implement it doesn't exist yet?

I agree. NJ gun dealers need to move or find a new line of work because no manufacturer is going to accomadate this nonsense. When will it end?

This is how it will work. Come up with a 90 percent accurate safety system and make it the standard system, thus outlawing all other handguns. This makes only one or two model handguns for NJ residents. The manufacturer for the system thinks they will make a killing being the only handgun types in NJ. Then comes the betrayal. The first time the gun safety fails, the leftist lawyers will sue and win. Thus wiping out the last remaining handgun model made available by this act. Then the NJ state government will repeat the same scheme for long guns.

Agreed. But on the bright side, all the criminals will go there.

This is absurb; suppose a child is home alone, and a robber breaks in. I'd rather the child be able to pull the trigger.

Bottom line: If a kid commits a crime with a firearm, then he or she should be put in bars forever, like anyone else.

This is pure New Jersey absurdity.

Too bad that any of the pols in Jersey are too gutless to make this law apply to not just cops, but especially the cops and other armed gaurds that protect the Governor, legislators and ESPECIALLY the one's protecting Sarah Brady, her crippled husband who she has shamelessly exploited, and every other employee of the anti-gun corporations...but gun control is all about being gutless, so that will never happen.

This so-called "smart gun" technology is the gun-grabbers wet-dream - mandate a technology that doesn't exist, will never exist, and will never be 100% reliable. The problem is, even the tyrants in the New Jersey government know its just so much BS, that's why they said that this law won't become effective until three years after such technology becomes failsafe. Sarah Brady will be shoveling coal in Hades a long time before this actually has any meaning. Good riddance.

And if someone ever dispatches that old shrew to that very hot corner of Hell, I hope and pray that they use a baseball bat to do it. If so, I will personally start an organization called Ball-Bat Control Incorperated, and I won't rest until each and every ball-bat is registered and locked away out of the hands of children. Of course I'll greatly increase my standard of living by exploiting her tragic demise...but that will be okay because, of course, IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN!

Now, if the gun companies want to do the right thing, they will just quit selling guns of any nature (and ammo to!) in any size/shape/form to anyone, including law enforcement, in New Jersey. This is absolutely rediculous.... I guess the Ultra-Freak liberals are getting their way yet again......
